Hi, I have decided to start weaning slowly with my LO.As he is nearly 7 months old now( a bit late cos he was prem). my question is how do i go about giving baby rice and when?
this is roughly his routine at the mo

7am -7oz bottle
12-7oz bottle( someimes has 6OZ)
4pm- 7oz bottle( sometimes has 6oz)
8-9pm- 7oz bottle

Im guessing i give him the same amount of milk so do i give him the baby rice before or after his bottle? and do i just give him one spoonful a day? also what bottle do you think would be best im thinking maybe the 4pm bottle.

any suggestions or experiences will be very helpful. :D

tbh at his age I wouldn't bother with baby rice (the stuff tastes vile - bleurgh) or purees. Your baby will have developed/be developing the ability to move food from the front of their mouth to the back and will be able to cope with finger foods. I would highly recommend baby led weaning, so much easier clicky

I think everyone is different.... but I'm kinda following the Annabel Karmel's meal planners.

She suggests starting with the midday feed and says it's good to introduce lots of different flavours quite quickly (2 days on one food, then try something else). I only started weaning my LO 2 weeks ago (he was a preme too) but he's doing really well with all the different flavours I've given him.

I give him a breastmilk feed first (so he's not starving & grumpy), then made up a small amount of babyrice with breastmilk to try him on... the first few days he didn't really know what to do, kept pushing his tongue out & not opening his mouth, so I stopped and waited a few days before trying again.

Now he opens his mouth to accept the spoon & is currently on 2 ice cubes worth of pureed veggies for his lunch, and 2 days ago I started him on breakfast too. He's had sweet potato, apple, parsnip, carrot and raw mashed banan & avocado so far.

I never bothered with baby rice either - I agree it tastes horrible. I started off by pureeing veg and fruit and giving him just one taste at a time. Once he was ok with that I mixed things together, then once he was used to that I started blend it less and less. He now eats everything and anything, and is great at feeding himself too. I started giving him food to feed himself once he was used to the tastes and textures of food. Be prepared for lots of mess......there is always bits of food everywhere when Dylan is eating!

To start with I made sure I gave him a bf first, then offered him food around lunch time because I didn't want it to sit in his stomach at night time when he was sleeping (I'm not into feeding to make them sleep). Once he was ok with lunch time feeds I started giving him breakfast cereal, or just a bit of fruit in the morning. I then introduced dinner and haven't really looked back. The whole process took about 5-6 weeks to get him from eating purees to mashed up food, then feeding himself x

Right at the bottom of the link it does say if you've got a preme baby to get advice from HV if you want to go down this route.

I would agree with the BLW comment if your LO is developmentally capable. I never used babyrice when I weaned at 6 months and started with steamed veg sticks (caroots and brocolli went down well) and just built up to every other type of food. I did the milk feed first and then meals, starting with breakfast and lunch and adding in dinner later.

thanks ladies. plenty of ideas to think about. ill have a read up on baby lead weaning also.x :D
