am i allowed to eat mussels? it doesn't say anything about them in the book i have and i right fancy some. :)

Shellfish is fine as long as its properly cooked hun

if youre going to get food posioning then its gonna be off something like mussels -i would avoid them personally.

Ooooh while someones asking.. prawn salads.. are these not good to eat? cos i was gagging for one.. im sorry.. im useless when it comes to knowing all this..

thank you for all your answers, i think i might go for the safe option and not bother, i googled it and got mixed answers, i also just read i shouldn't eat tuna, but my book says i can, now i am confused, is tuna safe?

I've eaten a lot of mussels in the past and never been ill! However, I am onl eating shell fish at the mo if it's been cooked at home so I can sure it's properly (or even over-) cooked. Just make sure you don't eat the 'are they open properly or not' ones and you SHOULD be fine. However, it's personal choice about how risky you find it! I've never been ill from eating gooey blue cheese but have been avoiding it!

You can have 2 portions of tuna a week i think.

jellyk, thank you very much  i read in my book i can have 2 portions of oily fish a week, including tuna, so thats good, dam google can be such a liar sometimes :) some places on google say all fish is a no no, thats just stupid, we need the omega 3 i read, i will stick to a bit of tuna each week, think i will feel better if i avoid the mussels. it is strange, i have never liked cheese but now i want some, really want some, how weird, it seems baby likes cheese :)

I've really missed runny eggs - I have my own chickens and they have never made me ill but it can make you very paranoid! I have had a couple of soft ones...!

Don't forget, no shark, swordfish or marlin as the are very deep sea fish and have high levels of bad stuff, and no sushi unless it's been frozen first!

i never eat those types of fish anyway, so i am ok there, thanks for letting me know though, and i have always been fussy with eggs, i can't stomach them when they are runny. i am very fussy with some foods :)

aww i have always wanted to have my own chickens and a goat and some ducks :) we just don't have the space for any. i guess with your own eggs at least you know where they have come from, and are probably much safer than what we buy in shops.

Hi Jelly

Is the reason we're not allowed runny eggs then because of what might happen to the baby if we get ill? I've always loved runny boiled eggs but have also never been ill. I eat runny eggs every weekend (well did up until the BFP)

We're getting chickens next year. My hubby is out in the garden building stuff as we speak, I've been promised 2 chickens for the summer!

it seems prawns are pretty much like mussels, if they are well cooked and you don't have too many they are allowed, but sounds like they are a bit risky too, so it's up to you really, if you really crave them a few should be ok. i aren't going to risk it though  by the way you are not useless because you don't know, i assume this is your first baby, like me, it is all new to us

lol.. yeah.. very new to me.. cos i was thinking if the prawns were cooked in some meal they would be ok.. but prawn salad is like cold.. so.. i would assume they arnt.. you'r right though.. better to play it safe than sorry..

Chickens are great! We have an eglu (they are really good for small gardens too http://www.omlet.co.uk) but really want to build a big walk in run for them to have a little more.

The risk with eggs is that we might get salmonella and pass it on to our babies. However, eggs that have the lion mark on are from vaccinated chickens - mine were vaccinated at the breeders too. Therefore the risk of catching salmonella is very very low. However, a chicken could slip through the net or the vaccination could have not worked or something. SO, they advise you 'just incase'. You are highly unlikely to catch it, but you could! That's the annoying thing, I am sure people have been eating runny eggs for hundreds of years without problems but you just never know.

i keep panicking about everything, congrats and hope all goes smoothly  and yes i am going for the safe options too, too scared to risk anything, its a miracle i am even pregnant, i was told i could never have kids so now i am over the moon

i thought we were to avoid all shellfish?

From gov food standards website (although ultimately it is your choice!)

Foods you don't need to avoid:

It can be confusing trying to work out which foods you can eat and which foods you should avoid when you're pregnant. You might find it helpful to look at this list of some of the foods you don't need to avoid:

Shellfish, including prawns - as long as they are part of a hot meal and have been properly cooked

it is very confusing, in my books it says no shellfish then on some places on the internet it says yes if cooked properly, i have decided, if in doubt do without :D

I eat prawns at least once a week and have done throughout my pregnancy!!!

I alway make sure they have been cooked, and if eating them out in an indian for example, just make sure you trust the restaurant!!
