Hey girls,
Emily has had the cold for nearly 3 weeks, and she's had croup as well. I took her back to the GP last Monday and he said it should clear up on its own - hopefully!
Has anyone else's baby had a cold for this long, or any tips on how to help it go away?
Gp said not to bother with saline nose spray. He said to steam her in the bathroom which I've been doing.
She's teething as well and waking very early in the morning.
Xc

Hi hunny Adam suffers from prolonged cold and the gp used to fob me off saying it will clear up on its own and in Adams case it never did, i had to demand antibiotics and within a few days they would disappear. You know Emily hunny not the gp so if you dont think it will just go, go back. Massive cuddles Emily, hope its better soon x x

Thanks Kerry,
I just think its an awful long time for any one to have the cold. It's really annoying having to battle with doctors isn't it? I have hardly slept since she had croup, I'm Knackered. I'm going to take her back on Monday if it hasn't cleared up.

It normally takes Drake 2 weeks to recover from a cold. The fact that she's had croup as well her little body is probably taking longer to fight it all off.

Try a pillow under her sheets and karvol drops on a hankie nearby, should help her sleep a little better. Hope She's feeling much better soon, I hate it when they're ill xx

Thanks yobado! I've raised the cot but not the mattress, she rolls about like a mad thing and no matter what I do she will keep going on her tummy to sleep. So I've just been leaving her because she's comfy. She turns her head to side, I don't like it but can't watch her all night. Typical she obviously gets her awkwardness from me ;) think ill get some karvol, I've got a sudafed plug in but I've been a bit wary of using it.

Karvol helped Tegan loads,
when she had her viral infection & Croup it took about a fortnight to clear up & that was with antibiotics!
hope emily is much better soon Xx

Both croup and colds are caused by viruses and so antibiotics will do nothing. Antibiotics might seem to work but probably because they were getting better anyway. Sorry if that sounds harsh but overuse of antibiotics is a huge problem and giving them unnecessarily can mean they won't work as well later on when they might be needed.
Babies immune systems are very weak and it can take them a long time to get over things. Owen has had a cough and cold for months now. If you are worried then go to the doctor. Sometimes steroids are used for croup so that might help. Hope she feels better soon xxx

Toby was given steroids for croup because he was struggling to breathe, but once he got over it he had a cold/cough for weeks. The karvol plug in really helped him sleep though x

Yeah Catty she had an oral steroid at a and e nearly 3 weeks ago. I'm going to give it another week before I take her back to the doctor again. thankfully it's alot better than it was just hoping she'll be able to shift the rest of it soon! Is Owen waking himself up in the night with his cough?

Sams mum that's good to know I was beginning to worry, didn't realise it could take this long for it to clear up. She's happy enough in herself and feeding well which is good :)

Toby seemed happy enough too. I wasn't sure if it was one long cold/cough or if he just kept picking up new ones while he wasn't well anyway. Snufflebabe on his feet with socks on top helped with his cough at night too. No idea how but it does seem to work!

He's always coughing himself awake but then he didn't sleep particularly well before!

Catty, how's Owen? It seems like Emily's cough and sneezing has gotten worse again :( I'm at a loss now! And nearly a month of this :wall:

I'm coming back to this thread again. That's 5 weeks now and as usual its worse at night. So I've raised the mattress with pillows, steaming 4 times a day, Karvol plug - in. Bowl of water beside her cot when the heatings on. Went to the GP last week, but it was the one that no one likes to see. He gave me an antihistamine 'incase its an allergy' he's useless.
I wouldn't be so bothered about it if it wasn't causing her to wake at 4am :(

My HV is coming out to see me on Thursday, she's being very supportive so I'll ask her again what else I can do. I just feel 5 weeks is an awful long time :(

Oh the doc did say I could try antibiotics but I'm not very keen because its viral I can't see how it would help, although I'm just about ready to try anything

Poor emily & poor you :hugs: really hope she's better soon. perhaps its worth trying the antibiotics Incase there's a nasty bug hiding?! (i know some people may not agree) xx

Thanks Zoe, yeah I'm going to mention antibiotics to the hv on Thursday and I might see a doc on Friday or next monday if its not gone. Its actually not severe, its more the length of time that its taking to clear up, and we're both really tired.

x
