Hi all

I've posted this on the 2nd trimester forum but wondered if any new mums could help?
On sunday I found out i was pregnant and due 22 Sept 2009. It wasn't planned and I'm still in a bit of shock about the whole thing, but wondered if i could pick your collective brains on something.

We are due to be travelling to South Africa on 29 April for my brothers wedding, and then touring round camping for a few weeks, and were supposed to be doing lots of hiking as well as relaxing.

We are hardy campers so that's not a problem, my concern is how big will i be at that point, is hiking out of the question, will i be uncomfortable sleeping whatever kind of bed i'm in.

Obviously every woman is different, and there's no set size, but reading up about what's going to be going on inside my body i'm wondering whether this is such a good plan.

Any thoughts, advice, tips would be gratefully appreciated.

Thank You
Sacbina

Hey! I'm not a mum yet, but we went on holiday to Turkey when I was 19 weeks. It was just a week in a hotel so it will be completely different but from my experience it was ok. I was told by MW to take pregnancy notes, also check with your travel insurance to check what you are covered for. Mine was a bit strange, but I was covered for any medical emergencies related to the pregnancy but not cancellation etc as I had booked when I was pregnant.

I was noticably pregnant when we went, had a medium sized bump and was wearing maternity clothes. The first couple of days were about 33 degrees & I found the heat quite hard to deal with when normally I would have been ok. I had to rest lots otherwise I was shattered, and walking about was a bit of a nightmare. I could walk about ok when the temperatures cooled . But, at the time I had a couple of infections and was on 2 types of anti-biotics so that could have affected me.

I wore factor 30 as well, normally I would only wear 15 but my skin was a bit more sensitive to the sun. I'd read that online so I took the higher factor to be on the safe side & I was glad I'd packed it.

Our hotel was lovely & the beds were really comfy which was good because I at the stage where I was starting to get really uncomfy. The flights were ok too, I think we were 5 hours. I was quite careful with the food I was eating. I didn't have an salads, BBQs and we were half board so we always made sure we were there for the start of the meal time so that the food wouldn't be sitting out for too long. I didn't have any ice in my drinks either. Basically if I wasn't sure I avoided it completely.

I was really just a lot more careful that I would normally have been but we had a lovely time & I was so glad we had went as I had been really run down beforehand and after the holiday I felt great. But, we did have a really relaxing week.

Anyway, hope that helps.

If you're already fit and hike/camp a lot you might not find it all that difficult. If you stay fit until then it'll probably make it a bit easier.

I went to Toronto when I was about 22 weeks and found it really difficult. It was really warm and my feet swelled so I couldn't wear any shoes I'd taken and had to buy flip flops. However, I had SPD and still had morning sickness and that stage which didn't help the experience at all.

I think you should see how you get on. If it gets closer to the time and you feel like it'd be too much then could you amend your plans? You might find that you're find, have no symptoms and feel pretty much the same as always.

At 21 weeks I was scaling the huge sand dunes in Gran Canaria not a problem. Walked about 5 miles and then be out every evening in the bars and wandering around. I was fine but admit to feeling achey in the evening at night when went to bed but that was probably from the SPD starting. I was used to hiking and would do 6 miles every weekend normally at home. At 20 weeks I was big enough for people to comment on the bump when I wore tight clothes. My main problem was needing the loo and having nowhere to go  .

Just see how you feel at the time but just remember you are pregnant so don't feel guilty for having more rests. I didn't want to use pregnancy as an excuse for not doing things and didn't want to look like I was moaning but it's hard work having a bump and I admit to worrying the whole time I was abroad in case something happened or that I was over doing it so never really relaxed.
