ok so my OH is telling me im worrying over nothing etc... but i cant help but worry, im a gemini lol

ok so im a home carer for my local council, it involves going to clients homes etc, its not a 9-5 office job or a nursin home, i go into peoples houses and help them out with meals, dressing, etc....

well anyways, i work 5 days a week and every 3rd weekend, if its my turn for the weekend i get two days off through the week. (hope im making sencee)

well im meant to be on this weekend.

went to work on monday, no problem at all, off tues as its my day off, off wed as im snowed in, and off thur too due to the snow and then im off fri as its my day off for the weekend work.

im based in selkirk (7miles from my home)

the problem is im worried about my wages and if ile even have a job after this as i feel i have left them in the lurch, but the council have even run out of grit for the roads, dont get any till the weekend, the police are warning drivers not to go out unless its an emergency!

the woman at my work is a complete cow....she foned me saying clients rely on carers... i was like yes but what good are we to them if i end up in a ditch and in hospital! i understand there are alot of clients out there that are struggling even without the snow, but what do they want me to do if i cant even get my car out the parking space??? and im sorry but my son relys on me and what good am i to him if im in a hospital bed??

i feel bad and i really do wanna get to work, but i dont know what they expect me to do.:wall2:

i was speaking to another carer earlier on and she was telling me that a different lady in the office has told her that clients have to understand the weather conditions and that we should basically be in and out of there homes so that we can get home saves....seems like they two ladies dont communticate in the office as i basically got threatened! cos i work 7 miles from home, she was like we could get you in to do some gala cover (my home) i said of course within reason as i dont have a car and it is quite a big town, she said we have gala carers walking to tweedbank (4miles away) as they are determined not to let us down...WTF:oooo:

it ok for them sitting in a cosy office.

this woman that has been quite horrid to me, lives in selkirtk and travels to gala, cos she has managed to get in, shes expecting me to get in too, but my car is proper snowed in! i reckon she flied in via a broomstick! but all the carers that live in selkirk where i work are on foot as none of the clients streets have been gritted and its impossible to drive !

but my questions are and im hoping someone will know something about laws etc...

can i get sacked for being snowed in?
will i get paid my contracted hours even though ive been off cos of the snow?
can i request this week that ive been off as a holiday?

please someone put my mind at ease x

I have no idea but I'd ask for it as unpaid leave :)

It's a difficult one, I don't think you can get sacked for it because you have informed them of your adsence. In employment law it's a grey area they are not obliged to pay you, some places will, but they can make you work the hours to make it up at another time, or take annual leave, or unpaid leave. A lot of places will let you work from home (obviously not an option for you!) or temporarily change your working routine ie work closer to home.
If you are still snowed in tomorrow (still likely) I would phone up and ask again about clients near you, within walking distance and no not 4 miles away in -20 conditions. It's reasonable to seek the work close to home and shows you are making the effort, as you've already indicated to them. If you are in a union, I would seek advice from them. It's very unfair on all parties really though. You should in no way put yourself in danger, businesses are losing hundreds if not millions of pounds, and no one has control over the weather. You could try sueing the council for lack of preparation and grit ;) hehe

now i dont know if i can get in for the weekend.....im so worried! x

:( Employers aren't being too nice about the weather. My son couldn't get in one day and he's never off work and he got pulled into the office over it

I don't think they will pay you hun, son wasn't paid. At the same time I don't think they can sack you over it either.
