I have my 1st appointment at the recurrent miscarriage clinic tomorrow at 12pm. I have no idea what to expect and what questions to ask. Can anyone offer me any advice?
I'm getting really nervous now.
Not really sure what you should ask them but I just wanted to say good luck. I'm sure if you just tell them the facts and also show how much it's hurting you, they'll guide you through their procedures. Just think, it's not like a trip to the gp, they deal with this day in day out so will be very sensitive to your fears, pain and concerns. I hope you start to get some answers soon xxx
Its worth making a list of the losses you've had, at what stage and when. They'll probably only count events with a positive pregnancy test though. Take a diary with your cycle dates in. They wil ask lots of questions about the type of periods you've been having, how long your cycles are etc and your general medical history. Usually after all the questions, its then off to book a scan at the right points of your cycle, sometimes they will also book a hysteroscopy (when the look inside the womb with a slim camera and take biopsies), but i didn't have this. The day is usually rounded off with you and OH being sent off to the vampires where they will relieve you of a lot of blood, and one tiny tube of blood from your OH (which he will moan about all the way home whilst you had 14 times as much taken ).
Don't expect too much info tomorrow, they will be unlikely to tell you much initially before the scans and bloods are back - that's when we made a plan of what to do next bfp. Be prepared for the process to be upsetting, i came away inexplicably upset, felt like a complete failure. They were nice enough, but its very business like usually rather than lots of sympathy.
Thank you so much for all the advice Fliss - can't say I'm looking forward to the blood tests, I'm terrified of needles
I was going to write down all my mc details and dates, and take all my bbt charts so she can check them. Are they likely to ask my OH for a sperm sample?
I don't have any advice but lists are always a good idea as I always get a mind blank and come out annoyed that I forgot something I wanted to ask. Wishing you loads of luck and let us know how it goes xx
When we went it was just as Fliss said, lots of questions.
We had it explained to us that they were going to test for 4 main things:
1) My egg reserve / quality of eggs (blood test)
2) Chromosome issues (blood tests - both me and OH)
3) My blood (Blood test)
4) Fibroids / cysts (internal scan)
There were also other things they look at with your blood but these are the 4 main things that cause recurrent miscarriage.
It was explained to us on the day that a massive 70% of recurrent losses can remain unexplained so be prepared.
Also be prepared to have a few blood tests. They will arrange a scan to coincide with your cycle as it needs to be on a certain cycle day.
Best of luck, we had all our tests done on 6th Jan 2012 and when we went back on 2nd March 2012 for our results I had just the day before get my BFP with James
Thank you everyone for all your messages - sorry, I forgot to update this thread yesterday. I only updated my journal. Here's what I wrote:
My appointment went ok but as I had got myslf so worked up, it felt like a bit of an anti climax! I took all my temp charts with me but the specialist didn't want to see them, and totally dismissed the possibility I have low progesterone. She said the problems were most likely due to my age and the quality of my eggs, but that I was obviously fertile as I've had 4 pregnancies in the past 11 months. Also, she didnt see the need for my OH to have a SA. We had blood tests (apart from the chromosome testing one I can't remember the others!), and she has prescribed high dose folic acid for me to take every day. When I do get pregnant again, she wants to see me for weekly scans to check my progress and to reassure me. She will also prescribe HCG medication once I am pregnant if I want it, but said it may not have any benefits. Other than that we will get the blood test results in about 6-8 weeks and take it from there if any other problems are highlighted. Not really sure what I had expected, but I am feeling a bit deflated this evening.
I was a real wuss when it came to blood test - I was almost crying I was so scared! My OH came in with me and held my hand and kept talking to me the whole time which really helped Just got to wait for the results now and keeping everything crossed next time it's a super sticky bean.
