I'm a bit confused as to what clothing I would need to buy in preparation for the baby from birth. I've had a look in the shops, and there's all different sizes, some up to 7.5lbs, some up to 12 lbs. How do you anticipate which size is needed? And what type of clothing is needed? I'm due on 1st Sept, so do you think I should buy both long and short sleeved items?

Thanks.

I'm due 4th sept

I've mainly bought basics. I recon most people like to buy you little outfits when the baby is born and you dont know what your going to get. My sister has got about 50 compleat outfits 3-6months!

You can get starter packs of baby grows, vests and stuff which give you a selection of long and short sleeves. remember they are always going to grow into stuff.

The up to 7.5 Lb stuff is for tiny baby range...Dylan was 7lbs 2oz and newborn that is usually up to 10-11lbs still fits him now and he's 5 weeks old.

Generally for the first month he wore babygrows and vests and had a coat for going out since he is a month old I have been putting him in day clothes trousers and top to try establish more of a routine for him.

I am guessing you LO is due around end of summer so starting to get cold again. So LO willbe in baby grows or tracksuit type sets.

When i was preggers with ellis i bought only 0-3 month clothes as i thought as i was a big baby and DF was too, ellis would be. but he was 7,9 and people had to bring newborn clothes to the hospital. Outfits are not really needed until they are a bit bigger cos you just want them to be comfy.

xxxxxxx

Yeah, I have a feeling that I might get given a lot of clothes when the baby is born, so was going to just get some basic stuff like bodysuits and sleepsuits. I'm just worried I'll buy the worong sized clothes as you can't predict what size the baby will be at birth. I guess it's OK if it's too big, as the baby can grow into the clothes, but should I buy a few items in newborn size too in case I have a baby weighing aboout 7lbs?

I would buy about 7 short sleeved vests and 7 babygrows then get a hat and if you want a couple of outfits. I bought newborn and Jake fitted in them until he was about 7-8 weeks (he was 7lb 2oz born). I was given loads of 0-3 month clothes when Jake was born so I didn't have to buy much of that size. It might be worth buying an all in one coat aswell but maybe get that in 0-3 size for when it is colder. Just remember that if you just get the basics you can go and buy more once your LO is here. Jake was born in the winter and he wore short sleeved vest and all in one babygrows. I always recommend getting a grobag aswell for your LO to sleep in. I have put a link to the grobag site below.

Thanks for all your advice and comments.
I popped into Mothercare yesterday and picked up some bodysuits and sleepsuits suitable for a newborn (up to 10lbs) - hopefully this size will be OK. And they were on offer - buy one pack get 2nd half price! Bargain!

personally. i wouldnt buy that much stuff. everyone buys u loads of stuff, one the baby comes along charlotte had outfits that she never even wore coz i bought loads, just get 2 vest and 2 baby grows up to 8lb,
(ive got a pack fro next with a vest, hat, baby grow, top, trousers and jumper.) then get a littel outfit in new born, you only really need 3 items for hospital, if you are going to be in longer you could ask someone to get the baby something in boy or girl colours once it is born. (parents or partner) dont buy to much because the baby probably wont wear it,
dont forget to take new born nappies, bibs, breast pads, maternity pads (i used bodyform nights they were much better that the matresses of maternity pads) lots of pairs of big knickers and comfortable pjamas and clothes and a little hat for the baby to put on after its born to keep it warm.. or they will use one of the hospital ones and they r horrible. and a little blanket and i think you are all done..

and dont forget. giving birth is an empowering experince, even though its painful its pain for a reason, the harder you push the quicker its over and the faster your little angels in your arms. good luck and keeo us updated. xx

Yeah, I'm not looking at buying anymore clothes for now - I have a few bodysuits and sleepsuits and a little jacket, that will do for now. We will probably be given some more clothes from friends and relatives, and we can also buy more after the birth, once I know the gender of the baby. Just need to stock up on the other bits and bobs like nappies and maternity pads etc. 3 months to go...
