Ok, This is quite a daft question but it's been bothering me all morning! I know some babies can be born with a true knot in the cord with the way they move down into the birth canal, although I'm hoping this is a bit more rare. So I'm lying in bed this morning, can't sleep and neither can bubs as he's been sommersaulting away and I wondered......I hope he's not getting into knots in there! What stops that from happening? Am I being a bit dim?
Oh and I'm referring to bubs as 'he' but we didn't find out the sex, just my OH's influence on me!

A true knot is INCREDIBLY rare. Just try to imagine the manoeuvre they'd need to pull off to tie it. They twist and turn al the time and their cord will get wrapped around their limbs and body but they will turn back just as much and untwist. Most babies are born with the cord wrapped around their necks - both mine have been. Everyone is  at the thought but it's normal for that to happen and it can be more than once round - it's not usually a cause for any type of concern. My friends little boy had his wrapped round him several times. The only thing that happened was that he could only get so far down the birth canal before he stopped - he wasnt about to garotte himself! I say only but obviously is wasnt great for his mum because she was in labour a long time! They obviously coudnt tell why he was stopping so eventually they gave up and when she had the section it all became apparent. The baby is clever enough not to try to force past if he's tangled up.

i think to get a true knot it will have had to be tied when the baby is quite small as i can't imagine a +20 weeker pulling off a move to do it.

My eldest was born with the cord wrapped round his neck 3 times, he needed a bit of help to 'get going' once he was out but everything was fine. xx

Thanks girls! It was one of those really strange thoughts I had early this morning, I was imagining a skipping rope style tangle in there! Hehe. I think I might have been watching too many birth programmes!!!!!!
