When I was researching torticollis and flat head etc I found a website that said a baby should spend half the day on their tummy. Ella's never spent nearly this amount of time. With the next baby I will make sure that I get them used to tummy time from the beginning, but I was quite shocked at how much tummy time they need to avoid things like flat head etc. Wish the HV's stressed how important it is, especially as it could have really helped with Ella's tight neck muscles at the beginning.

Gosh that is a lot of time isnt it, Charlie loves tummy time, but absolutley nowhere near that amount of time, i am enouraging more time though!

wow!!!! Maheen doesn't like being on her tummy more than 5 minutes in one go, so definitely far from half a day!!!!!

Havind said that, the cranial osteopath I see for her did say that tummy time helps with flat head!
I am trying to encourage Maheen, but it's notr easy!!!! :wall: :wall:

here here rosieroo i totally agree that new mums should be made aware of this and the risks of flat head....i know i wasn't!! now my poor bex has a flat head on the left side...

Rubie used to sleep a lot of the time tummy to tummy with me or OH and I'm sure it did wonders for her head as it's not flat at all.

Oh, Jamie doesn't really spend anytime on his tummy. Nothing has ever been mentioned about this to me by anybody. Will this affect when he can hold his head up on his own without it flopping around?
Feel bad now :(

it's never too late, Nicki! As I said, Maheen does not like it, so even if I try to make her do it evey day, it won't last longer than 10 minutes big max!!! but still, it has strengthened her neck, I can see it now, and her head has rounded a bit already! so, try it, little by little!
(one thing I find useful is to prop maheen up on a cushion on her front chest, or to pu myself on my tummy next to her!!! )

from what age does it say that they should be having tummy time? Harley is at his happiest on his tummy but iv been told by the HV its a big "NO NO" even if im i nthe room as it takes me to not be looking for a few seconds and Har;ey could choke if he is sick????

im naughty though as i do let him :shhh:

Don't feel bad! HVs are supposed to tell you about tummy time to help avoid things like flat head and making torticollis worse. As bub spends all their sleeping time on their back they're supposed to spend some time on their front. Even now Ella will not tolerate being on her front for more than a couple of minutes. Like Mel said, it's never too late! :)

I'm not sure :? I would have thought from birth if they are supervised? :?

yea, I would say from birth as well, as long as you supervise 100% of it!

and obviously, you don't put a baby on their tummy right after they have had their food!!!

so, your little harley should be fine, Dionne!

and im soooo tempted to be very very naughty and let Harley sleep on his tummy, but i no i cant, but i have a few times when i push him in his pram so my eyes are on him and he sleeps so peacefull im sure he would go through the night if i let him sleep on his tummy

Hi

Kiara dont spend near that long on her tummy she hates it but is now staring to last longer and longer plus what do you do when they start rolling , i put kiara on her tummy and she just rolls on her back lol.
Katrina

Ella used to hate it on her tummy and spent no where near half the day on her tummy, and I doubt there are many babies that do spend that much time on thier tums so dont feel bad!

Iv found that since she has started rolling over she doesnt mind being on her tummy as much, probably becuase she put herself there, but she does get fed up eventually.

I really think we should be told more about tummy time. In fact its never been mentioned to me by HV or midwifes or any health profesionals I only know about through reading on the interent and on here!

Ops now I know why zacks got a flat head... I was blaming my dad because hes got one aswell hehe :)

Just a suggestion - alex has a play matt with one of this little mirrors on it and he loves being on his tummy trying to see the baby in the mirror and give it plenty of sloppy kisses as well!
lots of toys seem to have mirrors on them so i'm sure there is something you can get they could have flat on the floor as if you already have a play matt you wouldnt want to get another one.

just a thought!

My HV told me not to put Damien on his tummy for too long, as it can delay them learning to roll back to front (the way they normally learnt first) and can hinder the development of their arms and legs too???

Damien sleeps on his tummy and doesnt have a flat head, but has only just learnt how to roll, so to be honest hun, I wouldnt worry! Damiens spends most of the day on his front now as he is happiest that way, but he rolls to the way he wants to now xx

I've been lucky as Seren has always wanted to be sat up, hates lying down for too long so I think that is one of the reasons we have avoided the flat head syndrome. I was also shown a great position for babies that hate being on their front, it helps strengthen their back and neck whilst supporting them. If anyone is interested I can post a pic (its just baby across the knee with their elbows tucked under them - makes them lift their head). Also I used a rolled up towel for support, as Seren hated being on her front.

Damien sits up all the time too which is a good point, he stands up too (obviously not on his own!)

Until a couple of months ago Reece hated being on his tummy. He would scream if I tried to put him on it. Thats prob why he's got :(
