Hello all, Over the christmas period I discovered how nice tonic water is to drink (actually am becoming quite addicted to it!) but now i'm not so sure if it's safe to drink or not due to the quinine content. Have seen lots of conflicting info on the net, so I was wondering if anyone else knew if it's safe or not? Thanks and Happy New Year!!!!
ive taken a liking to this as well, got a big bottle in the fridge, id be interested to know if its ok, it never occured to me it wouldnt be
I found this on the net, said it was taken from an NHS site Quinine is not recommended for the management of leg cramps in pregnancy. Large amounts of quinine can induce miscarriage and congenital malformations (particularly of the optic and auditory nerves) Apparently they mean over a litre a day. I'd say its safe in moderation anyways but I'd not overdo it. Don't go panicking in the meantime
This is the source info in case anyone is interested The litre a day was taken from elsewhere. Am trying to track an official source on that. But I'd say the amounts of quinine in tonic water are minimal anyways. Have a read of the percentage as I'm interested to know and do the math
Was reading through the Bounty pack last night when I was bored, tonic was one of the suggestions made in one of the pregnancy mags for alternatives to alcohol.
