Hello All,

Only found out I'm pregnant today and I am a tea-aholic, and I am worried that this is bad for the baby. As I have read that you should limit your caffiene intake. Do any of you drink alot of tea? If so how much?
I am drinking decaf tea, would this make a difference?

Sorry if I'm bombarding you all with questions, just have lots of things whizzing round in my head.

x

I tried to cut down on coffee but drink alot of tea! I def drink over the recommended amount and it's done me no harm! I think I've heard other people mention that the chemicals used to decaffinate tea and coffee aren't that great so i'm not sure it's the best thing.

I would stick to normal tea... just try and cut down a little bit. I don't think tea is as bad as coffee xxx

It depends how strictly you think you should stick to the caffeine "rules" - while it is a bit better than coffee, you can still only have 2-3 normal cups of tea a day to be within the suggested limit. I got some decaf Yorkshire tea and it's lush, tastes exactly the same as non-decaf and I'm fussy with tea - it has to be nuclear orange and strong as fook so I reckon if I'm ok with the decaf anyone would be, but you can only try and see if you can tell a difference!

Its so normal to have loads of questions ! I read about de-caff tea actually being bad for you , and I drank 6/7 cups of teas a day before I got pregnant so I've just cut it down . I may have one a day now if even . but the guidelines say to cut it down to 200mg per day , which is two mugs of tea or coffee.

Well i normally like a lot of tea, i bought decaf once i found out i was pregnant, also got the yorkshire tea which is good, but this last week i have gone off tea completely, i fancy a cup but as soon as i sip it i feel sick......so i gueds ill definetly be cutting down lol

Decaf is better than normal, but I drink a good 5 a day o tea and hasn't done me any harm and im quite far along! Lol. X

I looked into it some more(checked a more reliable site lol) and I didn't see anywhere else say de-caff was bad . So I stand corrected :( sorry silly me .

hey chick, i've switched to Decaf and it doesnt taste any different to me x x

Just found this but as I've not posted enough it won't let me post a link.

If you're a coffee drinker, cut back, switch to decaf or try herbal or decaffeinated tea.

hmm , I guess the thing about pregnancy advice is there is so much conflicting advice . I would say do whichever you are more comfortable with ? Cuting back is a definite though if your a big tea drinker like me :) :hugs: I know its a confusing time especially as new findings are announced all the time . just do the best you can and do what your comfortable doing x

I switched to decaf last time and have done the same this time, its def much safer than caffine and you can drink as much as you want as far as i'm aware. I also can't taste the difference x

Hmmm, i suppose there loads of things saying different. Just found this, but like they say its the caffeine you have to watch out for so maybe it would be better in pregnancy.

Companies spend billions of pounds advertising decaffeinated coffee and we spend billions of pounds buying it.

The whole purpose of drinking decaf is because it doesn't contain caffeine which, as well as being terribly addictive, over-stimulates and dehydrates the body.

However what the adverts don't tell you is that decaf still contains several of regular coffee's other unhealthy ingredients including theobromine, which is almost as addictive as caffeine, and chlorogenic acid, which has been liked to an increased risk of heart attacks.

So to say decaf coffee is better for you than ordinary coffee is a bit like saying a Marlboro Light is better for you than an ordinary Marlboro cigarette. Technically it is, but in terms of the potential damage you could be doing to your body, there is very little difference.

I drink sooo much tea and really found it hard when I was pregnant - decaf tea just tasted like cardboard to me but I started drinking red bush tea which is naturally caffeine free... I think in South Africa they drink it with lemon but I had it strong with milk like my normal tea and it was actually really nice x
