Right girls, I was hoping those of you that have had sweeps would be able to tell me exactly what happens -all the gory details and your experiance of the sweep. How it felt at the time, after and its effect. I don't know anything about them and have just received my obstetricians appointment for my due date - last time I saw her she said that I would be seen around my due date and offered a sweep. If I hadn't already popped of course. So, I want to know what I may expect if that has to happen.

Thanks! :)

Xx

I've been curious about sweeps as it goes... Like what they actually do and does it hurt.... x

Mine hurt but only because my cervix was far back and she was trying to stretch as far as she could to reach it. She took about 4 attempts. It was uncomfortable but after it you think 'its not that big of a deal'. Just breathe through it and that helps, takes your mind off it. Try not to tense up. I was sore after it but I feel fine now and had it at about 2.30 today. There was a show on her gloves and when I got home there was show on my pantyliner so make sure you wear one or a pad at your appointment or go to the loo afterwards and put a pad on. I also needed the loo when I got home from having it done, not sure if that is normal. I will let you know if it works lol xx

If you've ever had a smear, it's very like that, with a bit more rummaging about!

If your cervix is posterior and closed, It can feel a little

I've had about 10/12 in my time (stubborn overdue reluctant to surface babies) and the one that worked left me walking like john wayne. Baby showed up a few hours later though!

My experience sounds similar to Emmas. It was uncomfortable whilst it was being done but afterwards I wondered why I had got so wound up. Felt a little tender for a few hours afterwards.
Lost some of my plug straight afterwards and was quite wet (TMI) below for a while afterwards. Had some blood and brown discharge since which my MW said is normal.
Have another one tomorrow afternoon and I'm not dreading it so they can't be that bad.

I had one when i was 3 days overdue, bit like a smear uncomfortable But Not painfull i was tensed as didn't know what to expect But it was ok! i lost quite a bit of snotty blood afterwards But that's perfectly normall a few hours later i had a few cramps then at 1.20am i started gettin contractions baby was born a few hours later so it worked for me xx

SWEEP 1 (39+5)
My own midwife.. very gentle although very slightly uncomfortable... said she could easily reach cervix although slightly posterior and she managed to sweep the membranes and i was 1cm but she could stretch it to 2. No mucus or loss on her gloves... no pains... no discharge.. nothing at all except regular braxton hicks that night for a couple of hours which then dissappeared.

SWEEP 2 (40+6)
Different midwife... very rough... more uncomfortable than the first and she kept her hand in and had a good few goes at getting 2 fingers in the cervix but with no luck... but she said she could get 1 finger in. I'd say she had a good 4 or 5 goes at my cervix. When she removed her fingers there was bloody loss, which then continued til the next morning and eased off a bit... then got a mucousy dark red brownish clot about lunchtime the next day. Was very uncomfy after this sweep immediately and had bad period pains and cramps all day and night. Gradually eased off a bit the next day (today!).

I really think it depends on the midwife you get and how big their hands/fingers are and how "rough" they want to be!!!

The first midwfie said it was very easy to reach my cervix and she said she had long fingers and big hands... the 2nd midwife found it difficult to reach (although both of them wrote down cervix slightly posterior) and she was a shorter, plumper lady than my first midwife (didn't think to look at her hands at the time!!) The first midwife didn't need me to sit on my hands to raise the pelvis but the 2nd one did!?!

I think i am now a firm believer of sweeps can work but only if your body is really really raring to go... i was 1cm, soft cervix, starting to dilate and only slightly posterior yet both of my sweeps appear to have failed!! Although you do hear stories of women who weren't favourable for a sweep at all who then go into labour within hours of an attemped sweep?

I find it interesting to see what they write down about the cervix etc afterwards but then you think "ooh that's good i'm 1cm.. or soft cervix" or whatever, but then nothing still happens!!!

It's a shame when you have a sweep, get the pains and some loss/discharge cos then you REALLY think things are starting to happen... and then it all just goes away again!

I'm not sure if this is the same everywhere but here before they do the sweep they have to say "would you like me to proceed with the examination"... now i remember this from being induced last time too and EVERY time they examine you "can i go ahead and examine you" "are you happy for me to proceed" etc etc etc... when i was in being induced i had so many internals my bits were getting rather sore and i HATED having to answer this every single time.... "yes of course.. go ahead and rummage round my private parts and make me even more uncomfortable - AGAIN!"

oh well rant over! lol!

Yeah I agree, think your body has to really ready for a sweep to hurry it along.

I've got to admit I kinda got my hopes up and now I'm sure it won't work I've been quite emotional all night. Cried about 10 times lol. My mum phoned asking me about it and I burst into tears, think I thought there was a good chance it would work so I'm a mixture of being disappointed and just emotional in general.

I won't be as nervous about getting my next sweep though now that I know what it is like xx

I had a sweep at 41 weeks-like the others said,it was uncomfortable but not painful. My cervix was high so she tried to stretch it down and round but could only get the tip of her finger in so classed it as an unsuccessful sweep---I lost like red 'bits' all day b4 losing my plug 6 hours later then labour started the next day :)

Yep pretty much the same here. I did gasp a bit while she was trying to reach my cervix (it was still fairly high) and it wasnt a nice feelinf but i tried to breath through it and afterwards i did think 'that wasnt such a big deal'.

Im not overly nervous about having another one next week. It was more the after pains i didnt like - i was walking funny for a day or two! Im sure we have much worse pain to come though! x

I asked my mum about this, cause she had a few x I think they check to see if your cervix is favourable enough for a sweep, and then they run 2 or 3 fingers round the space between and waters and the cervix...Its supposed to encourage the cervix to dialate and weaken the waters? Mum had one by a midwife who barely touched her lol and it did nothing, but the second midwife apparently really went for it, and it set off her labour that day. So if you cant feel it, i don't think the midwife did it hard enough! lol Ask her to be quite vigorous xx

I didn't have a sweep until I was 2/3 cm dilated . SO I dont know if you would call it a sweep ? I was in hospital as I had been having contractions and had some plug loss and as I was so tired and my hospital doest admit women to the labour ward until they are 4/5 she offered to try to help things along. It was pretty uncomfortable but I was on the ward an hour later so it was worth it .

Eeeee! I really don't like the sound of a sweep!! I hope I go naturally! I had a show on last sunday so who knows? I will keep up with my raspberr leaf and ball! So the sweep doesn't break your waters then?

Xx

No it doesnt break your waters. I dont think its hardly any different from a normal internal really though which everyone has at some point so its nothing to worry about x

Sorry if this is inappropriate but it kind of reminded me of some of the teenage sexual encounters I had with very inexperienced teenage boys tryig to shove thier fingers as far up as possible in the naive belief that I would enjoy it! Uncomfortable but not overly painful.

I thought I'd bump this thread as it's quite useful for any of us having to have a sweep.

Thanks for bumping Lulu, I'm hoping for one on Wednesday xx
