Hi all.

I'm a little concerned about my LO because he seemed to be doing well with his language development and started saying mama, dada, nana and a few other things at about 9 months old. However over the last couple of months he has stopped saying these things and just babbles a load of nonsense. He shows an understanding of things i say and responds to me but i'm just a little concerned that he has stopped trying to talk.

Has anyone experienced anyhting similar? Does anyone know if this is normal or not?

Thanks for any advice in advance. x

When he was saying mama, dada and nana he was babbling. Although they can say these they do not associate them with people. After the combination of one consonant and vowel sound I believe they go on to combining lots of sounds - which I guess is the babbling you describe. So rather than going backwards he is going forwards as he is linguistically more able.
So don't worry, it is perfectly normal!
DD shouted mama today and hugged me and my friend was very impressed! I had to explain that it was just a noise, she didn't really have a label for me yet  She does like to repeat sounds but we tend to repeat what she says so we have a lot of bababababa or papapapa conversations. I often think she sounds like a pokemin - particularly the other day when she was shouting bulba! bulba!

Layla is exactly the same, the "mammas and daddas" aren't really speech they are just easy sounds that a baby can reproduce as they are easy to pronounce (especially dada) and often the first so called "words". Coming up to one it is perfectly normal for baby to be babbling, almost in a singsongy way, this is normal development, they are starting to string sounds and syllables together into babbling sentences. Your LO sounds perfectly normal and at exactly the same stage of development at my LO (who will be 1 soon). The only new word she's learnt is NO or "Na Na Na", because I have to say it to her so often!!!!
