Hello, I am bf oliver, for a few days he has been feeding for less than five minutes before he falls asleep. Today he has only feed for a short while but has not fallen asleep. he seems happy enough, I am just worried he is not getting enough food now. Also one of my nipples is looking red and been painful. I had thrush once before, can it come back? the pain is in just one nipple and not deep inside my boob like it was before.

My nipples are sore at the moment too - Ella is teething (but hasn't been biting). She's also only been feeding for a short while.
How old is Oliver? Could he be teething?

Thanks for your reply. Oliver is 9 weeks old today. So i hope he is not teething!!

When Dom used to feed when he was small it used to be for 5 minutes at a go and I was really worried, but I realised my milk was coming in fast and he took what he needed in that time otherwise he would not have fallen asleep etc. Although because he only fed for quick periods I was feeding very frequently.

I think the amount of time they spend on a feed just depend on how quickly the milk flows out etc and the size of their tum tums :)

I think it does come quite fast, now I think about it, when I leak anyway. So with him sucking it would be even faster may be? It makes him cough sometimes! he has always fed every two hours or less, is this alot? he is fine in himself, he has has put loads of weight on so far. more than the average on the charts.

Hi Jadie

I remember Olivia doing the same, only have short feeds and I was worried because she wasn't feeding as frequently as I felt she should be considering the short gulps she was taking. I tried a few things - squeezing her hand (I think it was Beanie that told me there is a link between hand and sucking action?), gently moving her arms and legs and blowing on her face. Sometimes these things worked to wake her up and she would feed for a bit longer but then she gradually came out of that phase and then fed for longer. I couldn't even tell you how long it lasted but I was really relieved when it stopped because I was getting a bit paranoid that my milk was drying up and also worried that she would get dehydrated (it was when we were having the scorching weather).

Does Oliver have a cold or is bunged up do you think?

Brody has always fed for a short time, I was a bit worried as my first used to feed for ages.
Now I've started Brody on a few solids, I've noticed he's a really fast eater, and moans when I spoon it too slowley!
Don;t worry too much about times, as long as your baby is content and putting on weight, it's fine.

By the way, I also fed every 2 hours or so at first, then slowley he got into a bit more of a routine on his own as he got bigger.
