Hiya :)

Some of you might have seen my post in the members section about Isla's continuous crying, and it's been suggested to me that she might be suffering from reflux. Here are our symptons:

Fussing during feeds - arching her back, trying to get away from the bottle, wriggling etc
Only taking small amounts per feed so is dropping down on the percentile lines (although hasn't lost weight) and feeding every two hours or so
Hates lying on her back during the day - she tries to roll over and screams hysterically, but is usually happy when you sit her up for short periods
Generally really irritable
Spits up, occasionally quite violent sick although this is rare, mostly gagging and dribbles sick for a lot of the day
Rumbling tummy

Does this sound like reflux? What symptons did your LO's have?

Thanks :)

caitlyn was always arching her back and sicking up up to two hours after her feed, she would scream through her feed and take an hour to have 4 ozs, she was born at 4.9oz so she needed to really to put her weight on.

I would defo discuss it with your GP

ETA pop a large catalogue, argos maybe, under cot stand wil keep everythin downwards.

Sounds very similar to Phoebe... Get yourself along to a GP and insist they at least try some Gaviscon  If you get no joy, insist on a Paediatrician's appointment, as persistent crying is not right.

I got fobbed off for months with 'its just colic'!!

Its horrible to see them so unhappy and in pain. I'm sure its one of the reasons I've got PND.

If you need to chat or ask any more qu's try the reflux sticky, or you can PM me

Sounds very much like Becky's symptoms too, I only wish we'd recognised it sooner and it would have saved a lot of misery. Defo see your GP

Yup, I agree, sounds like reflux to me.

If the Dr does not listen just pop down to A&E, she will get seen by a pead straigh away (not the 6 week wait for an appointment that you will face getting a refural) and sort her out!!

By all means go to the GP 1st tho. I know I got mugged off with 'its colic' for 12 weeks before just taking him to A&E. It was so bad he was hospitalised for 3 days. I refuse to see that idiot, tosser, come garggling man that told me my little baby just had colic, and thats why he screamed 18hours a day - slept the other 6. idiot.

So in short. Sounds like reflux. Get it sorted asap and you'll have a diferent baby!!

I agree, you could be describing my LO at that age, our GP was very quick to prescribe Infant Gaviscon after she conveniently had a crying/arching fit in his office at our 6 week check, he realised straight away luckily and the meds did make a huge difference. (but not immediately, it has an accumulative effect I think, so give it a few days before you decide its not helping :) )
As someone else said try raising the head of the cot/crib a little and burp her well after feeds - we used infacol alongside as it gets the air up quickly and extra gas seems to contribute to excess acid in the tum.

Good luck hope you get it sorted soon, the sickness is one thing but I couldnt stand to see her so uncomfortable, you have my sympathy

DS would be sick up to 2 hours after a feed and he would cry really badly if he was put on his back.

He continued to gain weight each week so there wasn't really any problem especially after we started using Gaviscon Infant in each feed.

that sounds a lot like connor at that age too - gaviscon really helped. :) :)

sounds like it could be reflux.
India had it but didnt fuss too much so it went un-noticed for a while and started damaging her asofogus.....she was puking up slime constantly. then she started not wanting to feed from the pain, and she'd cry out when she threw up. the meds really helped us! she was on a high dose and most of her symptoms went away within 5 days or so. She still vomits a lot though. projectile mostly!

Sounds very much like reflux to me.
Tom had bad reflux when he was little.
There's a 'Reflux Support Thread' ... it's a STICKY in the Food and Nutrition section.
There is lots of helpful advice in there.

Here's the link...

I would say i think its colic, with abit of reflux as well. The reason is i thought reflux was just to do with acid and therefore bringing back milk/sickly, but doesnt stop them from feeding and colic is when they are in pain, moving, curling legs etc.

Does sound like it to me! Get your LO down the docs - I was lucky, both by HV and GP were great. I didn't realise soon enough that not every baby is sick after every feed! Propping up the cot worked, lots of burping (taking ages to do it, but I think it helped!).

No. Babies with severe reflux refuse bottles, because their throat hurts from all the acid commiing up and stripping it. And because when they swallow the muscle between the osophogus and the stomach opens to alow the food down, therefore alowing the acid up again and again and again. Feeding a baby with acid reflux is a fight, every bottle can take hours of fighting with your child as you know they want it, and they need it, but cant bear to drink it as it hurts so much! Offten the acid rides up with some milk, so if you can get the milk to stay put, then sometimes the acid will too. There was no way of making the milk stay put in COrey though, I dont mean vomiting, I mearly mean bringing up a tea spoonfull mabey, and swallowin git back down, not even enough to come out of the mouth.

It is possible that LO has wind too... but Colic should be nearing an end at this age, not really presenting its self.

I would agree with Jollypops. My ds has reflux up until he started having just two bottles of milk a day, every bottle he would bring what looked like all of it back up but continued to gain weight also he never cried in pain with it. Colic is where they arch their back and cry a lot so as Jollypops said it sounds like a mix of the two.

We didnt use Gaviscon for reflux in my son cause it didnt work so just had to deal with it until it stopped.

Also i think if she isnt feeding properly and is loosing weight she definately needs to see the GP/HV. Also my son hated being on the floor and used to cry lots so it may be that she just doesnt want to be down there.

It can all be a bit frustrating at times but you get through it

I am very pleased your LO never cried in pain with reflux. From the moment my son was born he cried for18hours a day in pain from it. I wish I was exhadurating, its no wonder I got PND.

It is very important to remember that there are different forms and severitys ov reflux, clearly your son was very lucky and suffered no pain, therefore he would not have refused a bottle.

There must bery VERY few things I havent learnt about reflux in our time, sorry times in hospital because of it.

However, only your GP or a Pead will be able to diagnose, and you know best.

it does sound like reflux hun, firstly have lots of     because it is hard.

Ava has been to the docs 3 times now, they started her on infant gaviscon which i thought worked but after 48 hours it all started again. i went straight back to the docs who weighed her and she'd lost 3oz in two days. he didnt seem concerned nor was he bothered she had only 7oz to drink the day before!

i agree about going to a&e and getting looked at straight away.

Ava is now on 1ml of Ranitidine three times daily and has infant gaviscon with her bottles. she still fusses about with bottles but i dont see the pain in her eyes and face now which is the thing that really bothered me. its like once she realises it wont hurt now she takes her bottle. she is a very little eater though, only takes between 15 - 22 oz a day!

please PM me if you need to talk or would like support, its hard for mummy as well as baby

I'm sorry to hear that your son had a bad time with it, i wasnt suggesting that you were exaggerating. I am also aware that there are differant forms of reflux i was marely telling my experiance of it and was also writing my reply whilst you were writing yours so didnt actually read your post before i hit reply. It is possible that there could be other reasons for it not just reflux and i was just putting those forward.

I agree with Corey's Mummy.
Reflux DOES make them arch their backs when they're feeding as the pain of the acid causes them so much pain. They DO cry with pain from the reflux too.

Best to go to your GP asap and keep on and on until you get some proper help.

Tom was on Gaviscon, Ranitidine and Domperidone before we saw an improvement.

i give our son infacol it relives pain and helps them pass wind better, ive used it with my daughter too..and i find it to be very good you can use it from birth
