Bertie is not getting on well with feeding at the moment. He's a hungry lil piggy and has gone up to 4 oz nearly every feed but he suffers so much afterwards. I was severely lactose intolerant when I was born and it is hereditary so am going to book the doctors tomorrow to get him tested for it. The symptoms listed for the intolerance are very similar to what he has, diarrhoea, vomiting, colic and tummy cramps. Watching the poor little mite roll his hands over his tummy after feeding is breaking my heart :(. Although it's getting there my breast milk isn't enough to satisfy him just yet and we need to know if he is intolerant anyway for when he is weaned.

He's been on cow and gate newborn and this is cow's milk based, I'm going to try and find a non cow's milk based formula tomorrow and give that a go once we've seen the gp just in case.

Has anyone else's LO got this? Any recommendations on a new formula? xxxxxxxxxx

U should speak to loopylouise am sure her LO has cow and gate infasoy zxx

Thanks I will do. Just read her thread about it so am going to try it if it's ok for newborns. If I try it and it doesn't solve the problem at least I've tried.

Been watching him all night because he keeps vomiting or retching in his sleep and I'm worried he'll choke, which he probably wouldn't but when it's dark and scary and I can't see him properly I can imagine it

I hope it works for your LO it's horrible when you spend the night worrying about them xxx

You shouldn't give infasoy under 6 months. Doctors should be able to prescribe formula x

Zac was on nutramigen, he got it prescribed by a dietician. I would go to the Docs, it's horrible to see them suffer, but maybe try comfort milk while you are waiting xxx

Hiya chick!

I didn't want to change Harlow onto the Soyamilk and held out for 8 weeks! In the end enough was enough and I have seen an amazing result since the change.

If you do want to change, I would recommend changing to the comfort formula first as this has a reduced lactose in the milk, see how your LO is on this and if no different then go onto Soy.

I did see a difference in the comfort formula compared to the normal formula, it reduced her discomfort by 50% but it still was not the perfect solution. I let her lil belly get used to the reduced lactose and then changed over to Soy where it has no lactose in. This way your not giving your LO a huge shock and you would be gradually building him used to the reduced lactose.

The Soy milk stinks but you get used to it lol, oh and it is from Birth onwards so it is ok for babies under 6 months. However people will debate that they are not going to get the correct nutrition in comparison to normal formula.

What I am going to do when she is 13 weeks old, I am going to try and re -introduce the normal cows milk formula back into her diet by mixing her formulas over a period of time. You have to be careful changing babies over to soy milk as if they are not lactose intolerant you can cause them to become intolerant in the end so just be wary of that.

Hope it all works in for you both. I understand how upsetting all this can be. Feel free to ask me any other questions xx

Thank you ladies

I spoke to the gp and the mw this morning cos he was sick in his sleep again and the gp is going to start testing him for the allergy. The mw said because I had it bad there's a good chance I have passed it down and to stop the cow & gate and go for the soya milk. He has his 10 day check on thursday so they will revue it then. It's the sleep vomiting that concerned them the most cos he just doesn't stir when it happens and with the diarrhoea as well the mw said he's obviously reacting to something.

He's had an ounce and a half of SMA Wysoy, I didn't want to give him too much first feed and he's had no griping, no hand rolling and no retching or vomiting so far, this was 2 hours ago. We would still be winding him now on the milk powder but he burped first time and has cleared himself. He's now sleeping so soundly without grunting or mewing :)

Fingers crossed this is going to work xxxxxxxxxx

I seen an improvement straight after her first feed of soy too. Glad he seems better x

It's quite frightening really, because I always planned to bf I never thought I would have to worry about this stuff.

I'll be keeping a strict eye on how he gets on and if necessary will go back to the milk formula, I know they can get sort of food shock xxxxxxxxx

Prepare for the constipation! Apparently soy milk is prone for it! Harlow was constipated for a few days, was just lil hard pebbles in her nappies all the time, but she has finally had a normal poop last night x

just seen this bb (i asked in the other thread what berties issues were). Max is sick in his sleep too but i thought this qas quite normal, got told it was normal at hospital! and was told not to worry coz they always turn their heads to the side when they are sick. Max doesnt seem to vomit as such though it kinda just falls out of his mouth lol ....doesnt bother him at all and he doesnt get distressed over it.

glad to hear the soya is working hope it keeps getting better xxxxx

Just had 2nd soya feed and still no symptoms *touch wood* :yay:

hun I have changed AJ to lactose free SMA as he was reacting to the lactose this smells like normal milk and tastes the same for the babes too. We have dropped the gaviscon as thi made him terribly constipated and his poos are now totally normal. I am still taking him to the docs tomorrow as I wanna talk to him about the milk etc. If it works you can get the milk and infacol etc on prescription. Worth it seeing as you don't pay for kids prescriptions. AJ also does the gagging reaching thing in his sleep and it wakes him up frequently but mw said he would grow out of it!? xxxxxxxxxxx

Crikey it sounds more common than you would think. Bertie is loving the sma wysoy and has been so much more content overnight although he's now still determined to finish every feed with a consoling cuddle that he doesn't really need any more, the little monkey lol.

I am so being played and it won't be the last time

Having looked at the symptoms of milk intolerance I am really concerned that AJ may need the wysoy now. Have made a drs app for friday. x

My eldest was lactose intolerant and thrived on sma lactose free, although it did make poo. very hard and pellet like for the first week which was a shock for Ben after weeks of discomfort and awful diarrhea (which the doctors had said would clear up and never did!)

Well my happy little boy is taking 3oz a time now with only one burp in between before rooting around again :D. His feeds were taking a few hours at points because of the winding and vomiting but now they are over in 30 odd minutes. Looking at photos this morning to choose one to have made into a canvas and we've chosen one from when he was a day old.....his cheeks have really filled out  can't wait to see what his weight is later :D
