Can anyone share there experiences with this with me. Also can a baby who has never shown any issues before suddenly become Lactose Intollerent.

The reason i am asking is that Calleigh is poorly at the moment and we are under the doctor due to her weight gain and horrendous nappies and they mentioned this may be a reason but i didnt think that it would suddenly show now at gone ten months old

i have some experience of this hun luke became temporalily lactose intolerant when he was a bout 3 months old but it wasn't picked up for weeks and i was at the end of my tether trying different milks etc.

basically luke had a strangulated hernai so he had to have an operation to untwist it and sort it out and they think this was what triggered his lactose intolerance. i tried him on SMA LF (lactose free milk) and the change was unbelievable he was a different baby. i kept him on this milk for 4 or 5 months or so i forget exact times and then i tried him back on normal SMA gold and luckily enough for us he was ok and it was temporaryy due to his surgery.

if they are suspecting lactose intolerance for your lil 1 and it has only been picked up now have they mentioned it could be temporary? like has he had a nasty stomach upset or anything like that to warrant it?

i definitely recommend the SMA LF if you use formula it was a godsend for us, it comes in a smaller tin at the same price as a normal tin of formula but if they confirm the diagnosis then you should be able to get it on prescription x good luck

Thanks for the reply hun :)

Well what it is Calleigh has had really bad nappies for over a week now and also in that time she has had a stomach virus which made her sick also. Well she has about three horrendous nappies in every 24hr period.
She isnt a great eater and has not been great since she got her first cold and she hasnt really improved since then. So she depends quite a bit still on milk (she is breastfed).

We saw the HV and Doctor yesterday who weighed her and well she has dropped in weight quite a bit so they are a little concerned. They requested stool samples to be tested for various things, and the doc just mentioned Lactose Intollerence as a possibility.

I do hope its not as missy does not take milk from bottles/beakers :? so feeding the lacto free stuff will be an issue

I'm not sure about the suddent onset later on, but Connie was lactose intolerant from the outset and her symptoms were:

* greenish runny nappies which smelt appalling.
* shrieking and screaming in agony & writhing around - usually exactly 2 hours after a feed and she'd just recover in time for her next feed.

For me the most obvious sign was that as soon as we changed her to lactose free milk she was a different baby within 24 hours

See this is why i am thinking it may not be as she isnt in any pain or discomfort. The most is her belly grumbles which it never really did before.
Her nappies arent green but they are so stinky and dont look normal. I think its gonne be a matter of waiting to see what the tests say :? which at the moment may not be until we go see the doc again on Thursday.

You will find her belly will grumble more if she's had some kind of virus. Flod had a virus a couple of weeks back and her belly was making some VERY strange noises last week as everything was trying to get back to normal, and also because she was absolutely ravenous and her tummy was often completely empty (she ate SO much the first few days afterwards)...

I'm not saying it isn't lactose intolerance, it may be, but I'm saying don't worry until you've seen the doctor. Good luck at your appointment xx

if its only being going on only a week hun i would tend to think it is a nasty bug instead of lactose intolerance, babies can lose weight so quick when they are ill. i would be reassured by the fact that its only a short term thing and hopefully the stool samples can confirm something less drastic then Lactose intolerance and she will be back to her normal self soon. i'd like to think they ould let you know by thurs too, stool samples are normally screened in 72 hours depending on what they are testing for x

Thanks :)

I am really hoping that the bug she had and the fact she has been pretty much poorly with something since starting nursery 6 weeks ago is the reason for her bad weight loss and nasty nappies.

I think the fact the Doc said her was a little worried then in turn made me feel a bit panicky.

That's totally understandable

Flod lost 2lb in 5 days when she had her virus    and we were all SO worried :( but now she's right as rain :cheer: :cheer:

Wow 2lbs  poor baby

Saying that i dont exactly know how much exactly she has lost as i hadnt had her weighed since she was eight months but when we weighed her yesterday she weighed only 16lb 10oz :? :( which is what she weighed at six months

weight gain does slow down a lot especially when they start getting more active. its good shes having some tests though and they are investigating the problem. let us know how you get on x

Yeah will do hun

Still a little concerned TBH as tonight she has hardly fed from me which is really unusual as she would usually have a nice big feed before bed. Still having nasty nappies too.
She started to slow down in weight gain between 6 to 8 months where she only gained a a few ozs per month but she isnt an active baby, she doesnt crawl (only backward on occasion), cruise or roll.

Hope she's better soon  big hugs to both of you
