Hiya, some of you may know that I now have 2 of LisaJ's cats living with me. Thy were indoor cats until I had them neutered and now they go outside for most of the day and come back at teatime for their food and thats them in for the night. I dont have a cat flap and cant install one either as we are not allowed to mess with the doors in RAF houses so I have a litter tray in the kitchen for them for at night. My question is, will I ever be able to get rid of the litter tray now that they go outside or do I have to keep it for night time? I hate it, it absolutely stinks. Thanks

If there anything like my lazy buggers then they will be outside all morning and come back in a the 1st pit stop in the tray. and there months now.

Sorry forgot to say that i dont have any real advice for you just that i smell your pain. Cos it STINKS here sometimes to :rotfl: .

 Thanks hun. I think I may have to keep it as they seem to do all their toileting at night  I come down every morning and start gagging :puke:

You could try them without a tray but then you would run the risk of them soiling on the floor :?

I had a cat once before we installed a cat flap and it mewed at the door if it wanted to go out in the night, pain in the bum then when we did get a flap the buggar didnt like to use it so still mewed

Personally i would keep the tray to save cleaning up any accidents in the morning, but only set it down as soon as you go to bed and lock them in and as soon as you are up get rid so its not available in the day.

Can you have a window open for them to escape through?

Unfortunately, we have windows that open at an angle and they wouldnt be able to get out of them

we have the same problem smelly cat trays, now we have one of those air fresheners that go off every half hour to help disguise the smell a bit next to it, also the cat litter you use can make a huge difference! (also have you thought about a hooded tray with a door on it?

Thanks Rock-Angel, I think I will get one of those plug in smelly things for beside tray. I use Catsan as I tried a couple of other ones and they were useless, had to change tray every day but Catsan seems better but still smelly. I change their litter every 2 or 3 days at mo

we use that bob martin white crystaly stuff its ok, but think we may go back to wood based at it dont make such a mess on the floor!
we clean the main litter once a week (ours are still babies!) and just take out poo as they do it!
I jsut seen thread were you got your 2 from, thats so sweet of you to rehome them, they are gorgeous kitties

Thanks hun, wish I could have taken them all but hubby said no  They are lovely cats, they dont like Maddison but I'm not worried about that at the moment as they are still settling in

must be unsettling for them, they know they are loved just dont understand why they are being moved, bless em, the kittens are adorable, but we have 2 already Im not allowed anymore! Why are husbands such spoilsports!! :rotfl:

Its def possible hun as I do with my two cats. They go out for most of the day and evening but are both back before 10pm. I do have a catflap but its through another door in my outhouse. In this weather I have both of the doors shut as its too cold otherwise so they can't get out at night in the winter (summer they can). I've had no problems with them going to toilet in the house, OH lets them out about 7am.

I would give them time to get used to going outside, maybe not have the cat tray out in the day so they have to go outside. As they are not used to going out I think with time they will learn. I've had one of my cats from birth, she was littered trained but as soon as she started going out I took the tray away. We've had the odd accident but nothing in the last few years. Good luck :D

Thanks Misslarue  I will give them a few more weeks to get used to going out then take the tray away and see how we go

Just to add, the few accidents my kitten did have were very considerate.................she did a poo in the bathroom sink! So not on the floor and very easy to clean up! :rotfl: :rotfl:

One of my cats poos in the bath when he's upstairs and can't make it outside in time. He has some sort of cat IBS though so it's not his fault.

My boy used to use our inside one when he was mainly inside but when he became mainly outside he stopped using the litter tray as it was a bit foreign to him, especially in the summer when there was fresh soil outside to go in.

This winter though he has started using his litter tray, (i had to get him one as he was peeing in my shower, right over the plug hole). I think its just too cold.

Im way off point again arent I. I found that as he went outside more he would be less likely to use the wood pellet litter so I had to get him fullers earth as it was more like soil.
