Hello, I've only just joined up here. I only found out I'm pregnant very recently, and have been told I'm about 11 weeks along. I'm 20, a student and am both scared and excited about having a baby.
I just wanted to ask: I've made an appointment with my doctor for next week and I would just like advice on what to expect (how many scans, and when, when do you find out the sex etc) and maybe someone can suggest useful things that I can ask?
Sorry, I know it's a lot, but I hope someone can help me, I feel a little at sea at the moment!
Thanks to everyone who reads,
Marley

Hello! Congratulations on your pregnancy!

When I visited my Doc after discovering I was pregnant, she found out my EDD and referred me to the midwife. The Midwife came and visited me at home when I was about 8 weeks pregnant, where she gave me my maternity notes, asked about my family history, whether I smoked etc, and booked my scan in. I also recieved my bounty pack which is full of info and free samples :D

You should be offered a scan at 12 and 20 weeks, and find out the sex at the second scan. Some hospitals don't offer this though!

Can't think of much else I'm afraid, it's been a year since I found out I was pregnant, seems like more than that!!

Perhaps pop over to first tri, some of the girlies in there should be able to answer some questions aswell as us Mums, as it's ll fresh in their minds! x

Just make sure you ask every question necessary!
I went to my GP as soon as i found out and i was about 12 weeks, but he was so useless! He started arranging a termination! I was so mad! He booked my scan the following week and i had my 1st midwife appointment 3 weeks after.
I asked how far gone i was and due dates and he wouldn't help me. I came out the surgery as confused as when i went in! I was petrified and not told the dad as i wanted some info to pass on, just to give him so idea.

So what Poppy said, just make sure you ask what you want to know. They are there with all the info!

Hi, firstly welcome and congrats on your pregnancy, i'm also 20 and a student so if you wanna chat about things i'm here.

Secondly i think different areas of the country are different. i found out at 4 weeks and saw my doctor who just guided me towards the midwives and i had to fill out a form and give it to them, i then got a letter with my scan through and the date or agroup early pregnancy class which told me all about the do's and donts during pregnancy and booked my next appointment.

My first scan was at nearly 11 weeks though i think this is earlier then some places.

My care then went as follows.
MW booking in setion going through my family history etc at 13 weeks
MW at 15 weeks heard the heartbeat on a dopler and bloods taken
Scan at 20 weeks, we wearnt able to find out the sex at this scan but it was very detailed.
MW at 24 weeks felt my belly measured it and listen to heartbeat
MW at 28 weeks bloods taken to check iron levels and same as above
GP at 31 weeks, waste of time, did the same as MW
MW at 34, 36, 38 weeks, same as above
MW at 40 weeks, sweep offered and everything above
never made my 41 week appointment as i was in labour.

This forum is great for any questions you've got so i would recommend using it, it's amazing how much you pick up without realising it

Wow, such a lot! Thanks, I wrote everything down, feel a lot more prepared now, and definitely will be more assertive at the doctor's (13th Aug) than I would've been!
And thanks abcd1234, I think I will definitely need a fellow young student, especially when I start to get fat around campus lol!
Thanks everyone - and see you around the boards!
