Just wanted to say, don't be too negative. I'm overweight (BMI 40/41) and had a beautiful home birth in 2007 with my daughter (first baby). I couldn't have had a nicer time and will never forget that happy first day just the 3 of us in our home. I'm currently planning my second home birth. I did have a few issues (read my birth story for more info, link in the thread below), but everything went fine in the end. I am lucky though that I live in the Scottish county with the highest rate of home birth (5%) in Scotland with excellent supportive community midwives.
Its your right to request a home birth so do some reading up on it and stick to your guns. Here's a really useful PF thread with loads of info and home birth stories for you.
Good luck and PM me if you want to chat home birth!
I've had two home births and really couldn't recommend one more. They were both incredible experiences. Like you my OH being there was very important to me. My birth stories are in my sig if you fancy a read.
Having had two babies at home I can't understand why people choose to go into hospital (providing they're low risk of course) - it just seems so natural and right to have babies at home!
Like Valentine said, every woman can request a home birth, and they're happy for first timers to have babies at home too. If your midwife isn't supportive see another one... but I'm sure she will, from my experience midwives don't get to do many home births so get quite excited at the prospect!
woop! yay, good for you! one of the best decisions i ever made, to have a home birth! i'm definately hoping for another! make sure u inform ur mw asap, so they can get u on their list. xx
