Just read on another thread that leaving boys to cry can lead to them getting a hernia, I've never heard of this, is it true and is there any medical evidence to support it.

EDIT: Just read on google 2 different sites one saying crying can cause Herias and another saying it cant so i'm not sure now.

All i know is its more common for boys to get hernias

I was told by my HV it can cause hernias, but dont think its that common, just one of those things that can happen

xx

Well I just trawled through a bunch of medical info online and while it does say boys are 6 times more likely to suffer with a hernia than girls it also suggests that this is mostly in premature babies where the testes are not fully developed and becomes more apparent during crying episodes rather than actually being brought on by crying although I guess that is still possible.
That really freaked me out then as my son cries loads because of his reflux and the thought of him having anything else to cope with scares the hell out of me.

Max was 3 weeks early and one of his testicles didnt drop straight away, but is fine now. I think its only really when they scream so much for a long time that they strain it out, i wouldnt worry to much hun, i know what you mean about the reflux thing, max was sick all day with his milk, at 9 months i stopped giving it to him apart from his night feed

xx

I've never heard this before but my first thought is....why would you want to leave a newborn baby crying anyway...boy or girl??
I know it's inevitable for a few minutes but if we're talking a lot then I don't think its anything we'd need to worry about....is it?

Its only if you let them cry hysterically hun, as in full on screams for well over half hour, which you wouldnt do, I did used to let alfie have a little cry, but comfort after 10 mins and never let him get into such a state, theres alot of difference between a cry and a hysterical cry and im pretty sure none of us would let our babies cry for that long and that bad

I saw this too and was a little concerned...not that I leave Zac crying for anymore than a few minutes as it makes my heart wrench!

Thanks for bringing it up Miracle babe :D

i now my dad is older but he just had a hernia op and i would not wish the pain he was in on anyone at all

i dont leave B to cry anyway im to much of a weakling lol

I read it can cause brain damage. Nothing like trying to make us feel guilty. I don't really let Jake cry for too long but if I am trying to do housework and he is having a wingy day I do let him cry for a bit(like 10 mins) as long as I know there i nothing wrong with him apart from wanting attention.
