hi girls

hope you had a lovely weekend?

i just wanted to see what people think of this? i keep reading everywhere and hearing from people (usually those who get preggers after one month) as well as my doctor that on average it takes 6-12 months for couples to fall pregnant. is this really true??

i been on here a while now and i would say that on average MOST fall before 6 months?! what do you think? does anyone know where these stats come from? anyone i know who has said they are trying usually fall preggers before 6 months too, i been thinking about it a lot as i'm about to go into cycle 8 :clock:

xx

Well these are the stats from the Nhs website re couples ttc:

  • 20% will conceive within one month.
  • 70% will conceive within six months.
  • 85% will conceive within one year.
  • 90% will conceive within 18 months.
  • 95% will conceive within two years.
Those stats kind of seem to be accuarate if applied to the forums :)

Personally though, i think it's bs.

If you understand about the fertile phases and do everything that is required, i can't get my head around why someone shouldn't conceive in a few month. It just doesn't make sense to me.

I think that if it takes longer, that there is something going on and it might only be minor that doesn't qualify them for assistance... but still something.

Why should 20% of couple conceive within 1 month and then 15% take 18 month? Doesn't make sense.

Yeah I totally agree louise!! Thanks for the stats!! It just seems so convenient for the docs to say it's 'normal' but 7 months of using opks bd'ing at the exact right point and nothing??! It gets on my nerves lol!! Xxx

I had a play with the numbers last week and wrote about it in my blog post here - looking at why the numbers change

Essentially when I looked at it it's part chance. The egg and sperm might not meet, the timing might be out, the embryo might not attach, there might be an error when the embryo's growing, loads of stuff that's out of your control.

I was using a 1 in 4 rather than a 1 in 5 chance in my statistics and came out that average would be around 3 months. Most advice seems to be that by 12 months most people have achieved it which is why the doctors won't check you out until then

thanks scotchegg, great blog!! i suppose it does comfort me a bit to see that it happens to lots and also like you say all of those factors coming together at exactly the right point and working exactly as they should, i try not to get too hung up on it but af is due in a few days and cycle 8 is loooonnnngggg!! we only bd'd once this month for various reasons so i know its not going to happen and i had lots of af symptoms as well as a bfn this morning so i'm getting ready for cycle 8!! xx

I kept hearing that the average time to conceive was 9 months and we got our BFP in the 9th cycle! :)

Hi ladies, this whole average time business doesn't half mess with your head. My doctor actually told me that it was up to 18 months for a healthy fertile couple to conceive. Then I heard that if you've been on the pill, that can set you back a whole 2 years - which certainly seems to be the case in my situation. I got pregnant when I was 21, had never been on the pill after just 4 months. Now I'm 27 and have been ttc for 17 months, came off pill June '09 and had been on it for 3 years. It's interesting cos the 2 girls I know who have had babies/ pregnant couldn't take the pill cos of bad side effects. I won't take it again tbh, I'm convinced it's messed up my cycles. Good luck ttc!!!xox

omg that worries me I been on the pill for 15 years :( defo coming off it in jan. I would say it took my friends on average 6 months to concieve. But 2 of them have had IVF babies. I am 27 nearly 28 and thinking dammit why did i TAKE THAT PILL!!!!

Hey applecider

I turned 28 in October & stopped the pill beginning of November after being on it 14 years & was lucky enough to get period after a 26 day cycle

A friend of mine also fell pregnant first month of coming off the pill & she's got a beautiful daughter of 1 & a half :-)

Where do I fit in bloody 14 months

I know what you mean, this is cycle 13 for us but I was talking with OH last night and we realised that we couldn't actually remember when we last used condoms because we'd been using the 'kind-of withdrawal method' before that ( he would kind of pull out and then I would kind of dash to the loo/shower to wash )

Have you been to the doctor yet pickledonions?

I was on the pill for 6/7 year...i don't think it matters how long you have been on it and i don't think i will effect your fertility xx

I have to agree with shauna_baz, well in my case anyway i was on the combined pill for bout 10yrs when i 1st ttc and i got pregnant 1st month of trying, again with my 2nd pregnancy i caught 1st month althou that pregnancy was not meant to be, i feel ive ad more problems since not being on the pill... i just think everyone is different and cant judge by others experiences xx

one thing I read is that the pill doesn't cause problems, it masks them. So if you have funny cycles (like me) they'll be 28 days on the pill and when you come off you might think they're funny because of the pill when in fact they're funny normally but the pill controlled them and hid it.

i was on the implant and got pregnant within days of having it out:shock: i read it could take years so come off it a year before we expected to fall pregnany

No we intend to go in January....had alot on this last two months

We're the same, off to see the doctor in January right at the start of my next cycle. Got kind of mixed feelings about it, but I think we'll just go in with a list of questions, ask them and see what she suggests.

Yeah I mean main things I want checked are hubbys sperm count and id like a scan on me I know Im ovulating..:wall2: Does your hubby take any supplements or anything. Finally got mine onto wellman conception...he wouldnt take anything before...I think he took it personally, but I think he realises we are in this for the long haul now
