Just wondered, does anyone skate with their kids and if so what's the earliest you started them? I was there with my niece last week and Dylan was desperate to come on. I ended up letting him come on with just his shoes (just at the side)just so he could join in a bit. I remember years ago seeing a wee boy who had the double blades strapped to his shoe - are they the best things to use, and if they are, any recommendations on where to get them? Just thought it would be something different for him to do, and good exercise for me at the same time xx

I d love to skate, unfortunately the nearest one is around 20 miles away and ive only managed to get there once, so cant offer any advice.

weenik,
harvies ice rink doesnt do the double blades as I asked a few months back when I went. They seemed like a great idea

My OH comes from Holland where they skate very young. Our nephew is 3 and just started this season when all the water over there froze. He was so chuffed with his first pair.

The skates with the double blades don't exist over there simply because they don't teach you how to ice skate. They might be semi decent for getting confidence on the ice but they just don't teach you what balance is like on a pair of real skates. You'd be amazed at how fast wee ones can pick it up. A pair of small, normal skates (they MUST be supportive around the ankles, we'd probably get them fitted over in NL when Becky is old enough) is the best plan. Dunno if I'm quite brave enough to support her on the ice when the time comes, though, will leave that to OH

Laura, it was Harvies I was at and I was disappointed too that they didn't do them. I might phone the Magnum and see if they do them there so I can try before I buy :)

Daftscotlass - thanks for that. I've had a wee look on the net and in the US they don't really recommend the double blades either; I thought they would be ok because they would wear their own shoes, but then I support shoes are there to protect & support feet when walking only. Skating obviously uses different muscles etc. I'm now on a mission to see where I can get baby ice boots from - if anyone knows please let me know. I suppose my concern about that is that he'll need new ones often because their feet grow quickly (well, supposed to - Dylan's only in his 2nd pair of shoes since he started walking).

If you think about it I guess he'd have to learn how to skate on them and then re-learn a completely different technique when he goes onto single blade skates. I will have a wee looky around because I'm quite interested to find out too!

How weird, I took Mason and Brody yesterday!
It was Brody's first time and he had the double blades (they are called bob skates) I think they must only be cheap cos we needed to pay £5 deposit on them so I could have easily nicked them LOL

I bet you'd get them on ebay. I did think about his ankles, but they helped him loads, we tried the single blade skates first and it a nightmare. I think next time I would just make sure he was wearing boots so he got the support that way.

I know someone who takes her kids to a toddler session on ice with toys and sledges and everything it looks so cool but they don't do that near me.

Would that be me Urchin???!! :D

I started taking Charlotte to Ice skating about 9 months ago, basically as soon as she was big enough to fit in their smallest skate (a size 6) I didnt take her on in trainers, just straight on in skates. ( I have never seent the double blade thingy ones) and within the hours she was walking around on the ice by her self. I didnt go on in skates as it is a nightmare on your back when they are learning.

Our local Ice Arena (Hull) has a toddler session.....They have alsorts of toys on the ice, sleds and even baby walkers.....This makes it easier for me to take both kids. Unfortunately Tom refuses to just sit there now and he pushes a big foam building block around, he cant walk unaided but he wizzes all over on the ice with the block!!!

Charlotte is a great little skater now and is so confident. Any Q's just shout!

your rink sounds amazing - can you hire the skates there then? I'm off tomorrow so I'm going to go over to my rink after Musical minis to see what they have there, but I doubt they will have a toddler session. I'm going to have a look to see if there are any other rinks nearby that we could go to. D's only a 4.5 in his shoes just now so will maybe need to wait until his feet grow :)

Yeah, we hire skates from the Ice Arena. We have been looking at buying her own if she still likes going by Christmas, although we only go maybe once a month or so now.

I think some Ice Rinks start at a size 5, so he should get away with that size as I usually put Charlotte in a size bigger.

Also, I took her bike pads with us for some knee and elbow protection, also her helmet.

I hope your local does a toddler session, your D.S would love it Im sure!

People thought I was nuts taking Charlie, but she had pads and was at a special toddler group so I dont think its dangerous.
