Hey guys, just wondering if you had a premature bub that went into SCBU how long it was in there for?
I'm probably having my twins at 34-35wks and they'll be going into care from the sounds of things, I know it'll depend on their growth/reaction to the steroids etc as to how long but I just would like to hear how other babies got on and their duration in SCBU to get an idea. XX

I work in scbu and generally we say aim for your due date so u arent disappointed but normally twins of that age usually stay in for a few weeks to get feeding established but if your hospital have a transitional care ward they may be able to stay with u for those weeks rather than be in scbu.

Thank you again for a great response. It's a shame they will have to be in so long but I understand the reasons why, I hope my hospital has a transitional care ward will have to ask xx

If they are good and behave 35 weeks is better than 34 as they are more Likely to be able to suck properly so will be out quicker some units have weight criteria of 1.8kg (near 4lbs) and over 35 weeks but they just need to be able to keep warm and feed. Sometimes they have short term breathing probs but it usually quickly resolves and won't delay them going home as they would take time to learn to feed etc.

Luton and Dunstable, they're building a specialised twin section which should be opened in October (that's all they've told me about it though don't really know what that means), and they also have an SCBU.

Their scbu is actually AMAZING. They saved my niece and nephews lives. They were born at 30 weeks and had to be transferred there from Bedford to be cared for. The only people allowed on the unit is mum and dad. Not other visitors but what they can do is remarkable xxx

Thank you for this, I've heard it's good but it's nice to hear a great story like yours. Glad the bubs are fine. We are in Luton now but moving to Bedford although obviously will stay at L&D as it's got the SCBU. :) xx

Maybee have a tour in oct after new twins thing has opened, and some of scbu if you can, you might have to look through the windows only, but I found sbcu all a bit of a shock and a little scary when my first was in for just 2 weeks , don't think just knowing about it can prepare you for all those tubes , machines etc

Hey chick.
My Lo was born at 33 weeks. I was in for a week, after my waters broke at 32 weeks, (had steroid injections) then got sent home. Then after he was born, we were both in for another two weeks. He was in NICU (SCBU) for around a week, then he came to me on the transitional care ward. He was on cpap initially, he was treated for a suspected infection, had quite bad jaundice and an umbilical hernia. But he was able to maintain his own body temperature from early on. The main issue for us was getting him to feed. Initially he was tube fed, but after much perseverance and patience he went onto the bottle xxxxxxx

Thanks, yep I will speak to someone as going hospital today about a tour in October. I've seen what SCBU looks like on tv programmes, quite shocking, but my dad was in intensive care last year so I'm used to the machines/tubes now unfortunately- if anything the noise will just bring back memories I'd rather forget.

Hey hun, thanks for letting me know. Glad he's okay now and was able to feed etc. I think that is the main thing, it's just good to know what to expect as I know now I won't be taking my babies home straight away :( x

I had my little boy by emergency section due to a placenta previa abruption at 30 weeks... He stayed on the NICU for 4 weeks had a week of transitional care with me on a maternity ward and we went home at 5 weeks :) He was a lazy boy who had bouts of bradycardia (dropping his heart rate) and was jaundiced and refused to feed but he put on weight quickly being tube fed and I took him home bottle fed him and then topped him up via tube... Whilst he was on NICU he was fed every hour to start progressing to four hours (no on demand feeding for him!) I don't know of its the case with preemies or was at the time but I was told regardless of his sleeping pattern to wake him and feed him every fours hours lol. I was told he did extremely well and was always told to not expect to be taking him home before his due date. I hope your little ones stay tucked inside for as long as possible and you don't have to wait long before taking them home :)

Here is my little boy... shows how great these units are!

My little girl was born at 33wks, she stayed in till 35wks so a 2 weeks stay in total.. they do an amazing job in SCBU, it is all very scary at 1st and it takes a bit of getting use to.. there were twins in the incubators next to my little one, so cute :)

I had my twins at 37 +2 and they were in scbu for 2 days.
Twins dont always come that early (dont know if you are being induced for health reasons?) x

I was hoping they won't be early but for some reason my consultant/MW have said I will have them in November which means I'll be 34/36wks and they've said it's best to induce. Obviously I will try and hold out longer if I can I don't know why they are pushing the early birth except they just say as they are sharing a placenta they are high risk. Weren't yours the same? I feel like I'm just being told to have them early, I've read other twin mums who had theirs at 38+ weeks. :eh:

Mine are identical but had their own sacks and placenta x
