My little one is just over 15 weeks old, and since the first few days we had him home he's had a dummy to settle himself off to sleep (he didn't like his moses basket and we were desperate for some sleep ourselves)..

He finds it soothing and after a minute or so he normally drifts off and it falls out. He doesn't wake up when it falls out or wake up asking for it. He only wakes once in the night for a feed (usually, although lately he's been sleeping alot longer) and then goes straight back to sleep again.

Today I decided to try and wean him off it. Some ladies have said cold turkey is the best way so I gave him a bath after his first feed in the morning and then put him down for a nap without the dummy. He grizzled a little but I sat with him for a bit and he drifted off quite quickly, half smiling at me as he did. Then later on he was sleepy again so I took him upstairs, away from the noise downstairs, and he fell asleep without his dummy again. He grizzled a little before he fell asleep but I went over a couple of times to stroke his face and reassure him and then watched out of his view.

Quite often if he's left by himself (or so he thinks!) long enough then he will just drift off. I was determined after my hard work with the naps today that bedtime would be the same but he didn't settle quickly and was getting himself a little worked up. My boyfriend eventually just said we might as well give him the dummy so he can sleep, maybe just keep it for bedtime for now.

I have to say I fought back tears when he put the dummy in (baby fell asleep 2 mins later) which may sound a bit dramatic, but I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't finish the day without him using a dummy. It doesn't feel nice listening to Ollie getting upset but I knew that he'd been fed burped and changed and that he would eventually fall asleep on his own. I don't know if bf realised it was that important to me so I guess I can't be annoyed, but he didn't help with the other times that I put him down without it so it's easy for him to give in!

Anyway so sorry for the long (probably boring) post. Has anyone else done this? And have I totally ruined my hard work now by giving him his dummy at bedtime? I know he's little and that's kinda why I want to do it now, so he doesn't get attached and know what he's missing x
