I've had really bad toothache for a few days now, and painkillers are not helping so I rang nhs direct and they made me an emergency appointment for this morning.
The dentist had a look and he said my far back tooth needs to be taken out.
He said it will be numbed first with aneasthetic and then pulled out and I might feel pressure or a bit of pain.
I panicked and said I couldn't have the aneasthetic because i'm driving and got to pick my daughter up.
He said well if it gets any worse then ring back to make another appointment to have it taken out.
I'm being a soft cow but I can't imagine my tooth being pulled out.
What's it like? can you feel anything??? :( :(

i haven't had it done for years. it's not nice, but you'll be fine, it's better than having toothache anyways

some people even do it without anaesthetic :puke:

xxx

:D I had 6 out before I had my braces fitted when I was 12.

It doesn't hurt- just feels like a tugging in your mouth. The injection they give you to numb it makes your eyes water though!

whenever ive had my tooth taken out ive always been knocked out. I REFUSE point blank to be awake when they do it.

Good luck sweetie.

I had to have a tooth taken out whne heavily pregnant with Seren. I am terrified of dentists so I took along my Ipod to listen to music. I had two cotton wool things put in my mouth to numb it then had the injections of aenesthetic. I was then called back in, I sat down put on my Ipod, closed my eyes - the song didn't even get to the first chorus lol. I could feel her tugging away but it wasn't painful.

i had two taken out when i was younger. i dont remember it hurting, but i just remember them pulling and it was out.

The anaesthetic injection is worse than getting the tooth out.
Its not sore as such just isnt pleasant!!
When the tooths being pulled its just a tuggin feeling, its over really quickly.
I suggest you get it out now rather than waiting.
One of mine needed exteracting but never got round to going back to the dentist.
When I finally did it had started to rot &the root was bent & it took ages to get it. Ended up in about 4 different pieces. :puke:

I always get sedated to have any out, i had really bad toothache once and a dentist pulled it and i was screaming! I felt physically sick with the pulling and ripping involved so after that i was sedated for my wisdoms to come out, i know i need a tooth out now but i am hoping i can wait until baby is born so i can be sedated again!

Doesn't sound very nice :? :(
I didn't know you could be knocked out??

I had a wisdom tooth taken out under local anaesthetic. You can hear the cracking of the roots and stuff :puke: but there's no pain, just a tugging feeling.

You will be fine honestly. Just don't sleep with your best pillowcase tonight

... and then after that experience I elected for general anaesthetic to have the remaining three taken out :rotfl:

can you ask for it to be done that way?? Would they do it there and then? How long does it take etc?

It'll be quicker and easier to have it done at the dentist. I had one removed about 2 months ago.

The injection is just a little sting.. similar to getting bloods taken but in your gum. It all goes numb and then they take the tooth out with a bit of pulling and tugging. I had no pain at all. It just feels a bit uncomfortable for about 5 mins while they get it out.

If you ask for sedation or a general then you'll have to have someone take you to the hospital and drive you home. You'll feel groggy for 24 hours, sometimes longer.

Much easier to just get it over and done within 20 mins at the dentist IMHO!

I agree with pilkers.

The general anaesthetic has to be done at the hozzy and you won't be able to look after Leah afterwards. In fact I was seriously sick (and on major strength painkillers) for a week afterwards. They are much rougher with the job under a general because you're not there watching them. Of the four I've had done the scar / hole is much neater on the one the dentist did.

I had 4 taken out under sedation (2 times, two teeth each time for a brace) and one taken out under local. Local gets my vote everytime, there wasn't any pain, just that I could have heard it but it happened so fast and the music took the edge of the noise.

If you would prefer sedation I would ask you dentist to try and refer you to one of the specialist dentists that are available that can use an injection to relax you into an early state of sleep, much quicker than having a general anesthetic. I go to one in Burscough in Lancashire and know that people have been sent from all over as it is one of the only ones in my area.

Ok thanks... my palms are getting sweaty just thinking about it lol
I had my placenta manually removed, you think removing a tooth would be nothing!! :rotfl:
I will make another appointment on monday.
I wish I had it done now :(

I've had seven taken out under local anaesthetic (like others, when younger, for braces), and four wisdom teeth under general, as they'd impacted.

It's a wonder I can chew anything

Anyway, I can honestly say that I've never had a problem with the pain. My mum used to take me straight from the orthodontist to the cafe for lunch, and I remember her horror when 30 mins after having two teeth removed I ordered a flapjack :rotfl: General anaesthetic is a nuisance - most insurance companies won't let you drive for five days, regardless of how you feel, and most hospitals say not to drive for 48 hours regardless. Personally I wouldn't want to be looking after a small child feeling as though I have bad jetlag - would rather get it over with quickly. The worst pain I've had with any extractions was a dull ache along the jaw, which was easily taken care of with ibuprofen. If you're having your tooth removed because you have toothache, it's unlikely the pain afterwards would be any worse than you already have.

Think of it as a good excuse for ice-cream :rotfl:
