Right im a little worried about GD and it may just be me worrying unnecessarily but here goes....

I have a history of diabetes in my family (nana on my dads side & uncle on mums side) but they said I dont need the GTT as its not immediate family. I keep getting told I'm very big for how far gone I am by loads of people and also when I had my 4D scan last week the sonographer said she has a very chubby face and also has a double chin which we saw!

Here's me today at 27+3 weeks:

All of this together got me thinking maybe its GD as she seems to be big? Ive looked it up on the internet and the main symptoms are excessive thirst, frequent urination and tiredness which i've had all 3 but those are also normal preg symptoms so pretty hard to tell.

Do you think it could be GD? I next see my midwife on 25th Oct, should I wait until then and ask her or should I give her a ring sooner? Ive also just had my bloods done ready for this appointment, will they tell me anything?

Thanks :)

If your worried hun, it wil do no harm giving her a ring tomorrow :)

Dont sit and worry Jo, give her a ring and tell her your worries, she may want to see you sooner just to be on the safe side, oh and you have a great bump! mine was on the large side and Glenn was only 6lb 5 i had a large Placenta so there are other things apart from a baby that makes you large, try not to worry darl.x

Thank you girls ill give her a ring tomorrow I think.

I kinda just thought I must be one of those people who are big but then at the 4D scan when she was chubby thats what made me think maybe its more than just that. She could just be a porker tho i spose hehe

try not to worry hun...

i dont think ur big for ur gestation..i think u look normal for it..ur not overweight.. and from what ive heard you eat a healthy diet.. so theres no reason you would worry.. even if u did have it it would be picked up in ur urine.. so it wont harm to pop down with a sample for mw to test..

mw told me that if i have it..(fail gtt) then i will still have vaginal birth and women are having bigger babies every day.. thanks for that mw.. lol...

I'm sure if you explain to the mw and say you specifically want to do the test, then there is no reason why you can't do it.

But, like the others say it should show up in your urine and it will in your bloods too if they are looking for it.

I guess it's not just that simple though or we wouldn't have to do the test in the first place??

I dunno but it's not unpleasant....and it might make you feel a bit better bout things

I will see what my midwife thinks tomorrow i think, my urine hasnt shown anything out of the ordinary so far so hopefully its just me worrying about nothing :)

What a lovely Bump jo, Doesn't look over sized to me......  :shakehead:

Can you remember the state i got into when people kept telling me how 'small' i was ? ? ?

Well i am huge now...... you will probably slow down now....and even if you don't. the average baby now is 8lb+ I also believe bigger babies are easier to have.... I know my last full term baby was 9lbs 2 oz and was born without pain relief and only a few pushes (3) so don't you fret.....

As far as i know.. if they have any concerns about GD then it would show in your bloods and you would have some signs in your urine...but like you say to me... if in doubt..... ASK !

Good luck Jo, let us know how you get on.... Lv Yvonne x

If you want the GTT test then tell your MW you want it, because you don't need to be worrying about 'what ifs' I don't know what criteria they use for booking a pregnant lady a GTT test, my urine was always fine but I was booked for it, but assumed it because my Grandad had diabetes and I have a high BMI, either way better to know sooner than later for dietary reasons and to look after yours and LO's health
Really hope your MW talk puts your worry at ease and everythings well, take care

I feel a bit silly ringing up though, I dont know what to say hehe

Maybe if you just make an appt to see her you will feel better talking face to face. You don't need to tell the receptionist what its for

I have an appointment already next thursday so cant see me getting on before then, maybe i should just hang on til then?

If you are ok with that...otherwise just ask for it to be brought forward. I'm always doing that as when I see the consultant, he always wants me seen quicker than my next appt. They never ask why...just go with the flow!!

You say you have some relatives who have diabetes. They should have a blood sugar monitor and it is very simple to check. If you have a high reading (ask your relatives to tell you whats normal) you could insist on an earlier appointment with some justification

I have already called to tell them this but they said as they are not immediate family it doesnt count so I dont need the GTT. Think ill just have to hang on until my nexy MW appointment and see what she says then.

Try not to worry honey, a few days of too much sugar in your blood won't do any damage. It's more the presssure on your kidnesy etc that they'll be worried about. I'd insist on having a GTT test though if you're worried.

I have one on 17th Jnauary but my dad has late onset type 2 diabetes and I'm a 'big 'lass myself so it's just another test I have to have. Feel like a bloody guinea pig!! :wall:

hey hun,

Just read your post i was in a similar situation myself and in the end self requested mine GTT at 36 weeks when oh yes i had GD and they said it was too late to do anything about it. So i had to be induced at 38 weeks.

Basically you are within your right to request one, just out of interest have you any sugar in your urine at MW appointments??

No ive not had any sugar in urine so far which is good isnt it? Im totally clueless to be honest!

What made you request the GTT?

sugar in your urine is one sign of GD.

I requested because although my standing blood sugar at 34 weeks was fine i had a GTT at 32 weeks and it was over what it should be but they said it was nothing to worry about. I was measuring between 3-5cm bigger then i should yave from 27 weeks over and a growth scan at 34/36 weeks both showed a baby on the 97th centile so big..

but dont be too alarmed by growth scans because amber was perfect weight.

So when I have my midwife appointment next thurs (29 weeks) she will probably notice if baby is bigger than she should be and also if theres sugar in my urine? I plan to also mention to her my worries & see what she says as its bugging me how people keep saying im really big!
