I tried to make an appointment to see my midwife today for my 26wks appoint and got told 'we're fully booked'

So because of having to pick my little lad up from school at 3pm i ask when the next available early appointment was and got told 8th March!
Also the best thing to do was ring the MW and see if they can see you elsewhere. :wall:

So i ring the mobile number as to which is their contact number for all women,home-births etc and it rang and rang then went dead.

This doesn't really make me feel great when i know this is what i'm going to be ringing when in labour.

oh dear! keep trying the number I guess. My MW does not have voicemail either, I guess the NHS are too tight to pay for them to ring their voice mail all the time.

My MW warned me to book all appointments 2 weeks in advance as she gets so booked up!

I agree it doesn't sound very encouraging if you ever need her in an emergency.

There seems to be a shortage of MWs where I live. When my one was off sick I didn't even get offered an alternative... was just sent to the doctor instead.

I hope you get to see someone soon.

I was told this happens a lot. I was advised at my 12 weeks appointment to call (that day!!) my midwife and book in for the 16 week appointment, I called the second I was home from the hospital and actually got the last slot for that week, 3pm of all darn times so was lucky otherwise my 16 week appointment would have been an 18 week appointment instead! It's crazy really but most midwives are assigned to a certain GP surgery and that's the midwife(s) you have to see.

What really peeves me off is that they are crying out (short staffed) for midwives yet when I applied to train they told me despite having a very strong application there was no one at the hospital I'd be based at (local to me) that would be able to train me so my application went no further. I don't see how they are supposed to get new midwives in to train when they seemingly have no one that's there solely to train them. Crazy!!

Book appointments WELL IN ADVANCE ladies!!!!

its the same at my surgery and at my hospital too. you have to ring at least 2 wks in advance to even stand a chance, but sayin that they are only in my surgery one day a week and i live in a pretty big community!

i agree with what you said about stupidity tho nicola, i also applied but the nearest training placement for me would b wolverhampton which is quite a distance from me and not really possible with kids at school n no transport, seems such an easy thing to organise really if they are in that much need.

Its such a pain. I had it the last time i went, and couldnt get in till the week after.

My sister had the same prob when she was experiencing pains mid pregnancy. She ended up calling nhs direct who made her an emergency appointment at the hospital. When she next saw her midwife she was told off for not leaving a message on the answerphone. The next time she tried to get in touch with the mw she lft a message and nobody ever got back to her. Her little boy is 2 months old now and absolutely fine, thank goodness

Thats crap.

I don't even have a number for my midwife though. I just have to leave a message for her at the doctors and she is only these 1 day and a half a week.

Ridiculous isn't it!

I've had to wait 2 weeks to get my 22 week appointment.

I have no confidence in the system at all now :(

I actually prefer going to the hospital for a check up. At least I feel confident there with all the midwives being nearby.

In my surgery the midwife visits one half a day per week! And she's been off sick for the last 3 weeks! :x

Surely they should be running extra clinics or something if they are fully booked?

It sounds sheer madness everywhere.

There's two midwifes do the clinic here at my doctors every Thursday 1.30 til 3, so anything from 2.15 onwards is just no good for me, i have no transport and have to walk there and back to get my lad for 3pm, so no early appointment then i can't go.

Bet they kick a fuss cause i haven't been and it won't even be my fault.

I don't have to see the mw until 28 weeks, I think I will book up at 26 though!
