My LO is only BF about 5-10 mins at a time, the longest is only about 20mins. I'm worried that she's only getting the foremilk and not on the breast long enough to get the hindmilk. Do you know how long it takes for the LO to get to the hindmilk? Also, if she only fed on one breast for say 5 mins and didn't get any hindmilk, if she came back on this breast the next time, will the hindmilk still be there "at the front" of the breast, or does it change back to being foremilk?

if shes gaining wieght , content between feeds and wetting nappies i wouldn't be alarmed. All babies are different. don;t worry.

Hi OD,

I used to worry about this too - but I reckon it all regulates itself so cleverly - it's magical. I worried about this as my daughter fed for such short times until I noticed that my daughter had put on 2lbs 10oz in her first 5 weeks (birth weight was 8lbs 3.5oz and she went to 10lb 13oz)!

I think it's all trial and error so please persevere with the b/feeding and I'm sure your baby will thrive.

DD used to feed for up to a hour, DS has rarely ever fed for longer than 10 mins (unless he falls asleep on the breast). They've both gained loads of weight (DS is on the 98th centile), so try not to worry about the length of time your baby is on. I've read before that when you 'let down' that flushes some hind milk out with your fore milk, and I know when I squeeze my nipples you can see two different tones of milk in it.

I agree with Budge :)

Thanks ladies.
I will just go with the flow and I suppose the less I stress, the better it is for both myself and baby!
Have a good weekend.

Exactly hon, but don't be afraid to post any questions you might have. I know that when my first was born I didn't realise how demanding and stressful breastfeeding was and it was only through the help I got from this forum that helped me through it.

Have a great weekend and enjoy your bubba. I miss those newborn snuggles!

i was told only swap breasts after one has emptied (altho millie has never emptied one breast yet!) or every 3 hours. if its less than 3 hours since last feed use the same side then swap after u been using that side for 3 hours. iv been doing that and my girls v healthy n gaining weight nicely. good luck xx

Grace has always only ever feed for 10 minutes .......and she has put on weight perfectly well ............

like you I was always worried that she wasn't getting enough of the 'right milk' and was forever getting her weighed at the beginning just to make sure that everything was okay.

sounds like you are doing really well with bf ............. well done you
