Family allowance/ child benefit

Is it the same thing? My mum was wondering as she thought family allowance was still going but I thought child benefit replaced it.

Yeah my Mum used to call it family allowance too, but as far as I know it's the same thing hun. x

I might be wrong but I thought 'child tax credit' replaced family allowance? Child benefit is separate to this xx

I don't think so hun. There was no such thing as extra money like that when my mum had us as far as I know. She worked full time most of her life. She only got the weekly family allowance as she called it, and that's now called child benefit. I only know because I had to go to post office for her back in the day and collect it for her. She would sign the back of the book to authorise me collecting it, the post office stamped it and removed the slip they needed and I got the cash. x
