I was admitted to hospital on the evening of 25th July with raised bp and with a view to having my waters broken the next day after a sweep revealed I was already 2-3 cm dilated. Unfortunately I was admitted on a very busy weekend and obviously ladies who came in already in labour took priority. I therefore ended up having to stay in hospital all weekend. I had another sweep on the Saturday hoping this would bring on labour naturally to allow me to 'jump the queue' but despite lots of long walks around the hospital grounds and vigorous bouncing on the birthing ball, the little madam just did not want to budge !! By the Sunday I was fed up and had a mini breakdown. I asked if I could go home and just allow labour to start naturally or could they give me a date to go back for the induction. I was told because the 2nd sweep had shown I was 3-4 cm dilated they wouldn't let me go home in case I didn't make it back to the hospital in time if contractions did start or my waters broke. I resigned myself to being in hospital for the next few days and hoping baby decided to put in an appearance herself.
On the Monday morning, 29th July, a mw came and told me they were getting a delivery room ready for me and to call my partner to come in asap. My waters were then broken at approximately 10 am with an almighty lovely warm gush. No wonder baby didn't want to come out of there lol. They told me they would give me 2 hours to go into labour naturally and if not I would then be put on the syntocinon drip. I wasn't over the moon about this because I had to go on the drip with my first born and ended up with an epidural and ventouse delivery and I really wanted to avoid as much intervention as possible. My mw - who was lovely - said they would start me on the lowest dose possible, only turning it up slightly if and when I needed it.
I spent the next 2 hours standing up rotating my hips and bouncing on the ball to allow gravity to start things off, all the while with my waters still constantly trickling out of me !! After 2 hours I had started to have contractions but because they were irregular it was decided I would be started on the lowest dose of the drip. By 1pm my contractions were coming strong and regular and not long after this I starting using the gas & air. After this everything becomes a bit of a blur, but I can remember there being a thunderstorm and the mw inserting a catheter (which hurt like hell !!) because I hadn't passed urine since before 10 am and didn't feel the urge to with the contractions and gas. At this point I had started to hallucinate from the gas and actually thought I had delivered the baby lol.
By approximately 3.45 I was starting to feel less like I could cope and so the mw decided to examine me. She said I was fully dilated and could start pushing. Now this was definitely the hardest part !! With this being my 4th baby I thought the pushing would be a doddle lol. I was so tired and just wanted to fall asleep between contractions. I kept saying they didn't understand how tired I was and how much I needed to sleep and that I wasn't going to push anymore so they needed to get someone to get the baby out lol.
Eventually after an hour and a half at 5.24 pm I managed to push my beautiful little girl into the world. The relief was amazing and I fell in love instantly. My OH cut the cord and then our darling Esmae Hope (who weighed in at 9lb 1.5oz - no wonder she was hard work to push out) was placed on my chest for skin to skin cuddles and a breastfeed while I got stitched up for 2nd degree tears - nice !! Despite that she really is perfect in every possible way and so worth it all
