Hi girls,

I need your advice please. Is it safe to have a filling during pregnancy or am I best to try and wait until after the birth? I am in some pain but if there was any chance of a miscarriage or any other problems, I will not have it done.

I went to the dentist a couple of months ago and he said he didn't want to do it.......Why??? And why would he do it now???

All advice gratefully received.......Thanks xx

Hi NIE,
My dentist said she wouldn't do any work on me, until baby was born, because most dental work requires an x-ray.

I'm sure if you really need one they will be able to do it, or perhaps clean it out, and put in a temporary dressing?

When I went to the dentist when i was pregnant last time i wasn't allowed to have a tradional filling as they contain mercury so I had to have a white one, they are not free on the nhs so I had to pay. It depends on how severe the filling is whether they will be happy to do it without xraying first. Probably they will stick a temporary in for now and sort it out afterwards. You need to get it sorted though, you can't be in pain for the next 5 months honey.

Hope it feels better soon

xx

I got a tooth removed (ouch) a few months ago but that was just a jag I got for that. She said she would wait until baby is here before doing any fillings because of the mercury, but she did say that if I was in pain I was to go back and she would sort it temporarily until she could do the real fillings. They won't do anything that would harm you or the baby xx

my filling fell out whilst I was pregnant and I didnt go to the dentist, then my tooth cracked in half and I still didnt go, it then started hurting so I went and all he could was a temp filling which bloody fell out, anyway I went to dentist the week after having baby and I am now having to have root canal treatment on this tooth and am on my 4th appt in so many weeks, so go to the dentist quickly, dont leave it, they can do SOMETHING!

I have never had an x-ray for a filling before, neither has my hubby. I also thought that they've stopped using mercury in fillings.

Fillings do not require an x-ray but if you need an x-ray, you can have one as long as you have one of those nasty aprons on :(

A dentist shouldn't give you a mercury filling but a white one, however, if you can not afford this, they can place a temp one in, it will last maybe a month or so but this is up to you, will you pay out for a white filling?

My Gyn and dentists have all said that the first 3 months and the last 3 months are the times they don't really like to perform any thing in your month, the inbetween is fine.

If you are really worried, speak to your Gyn hun xx

I don't think I will pay for a white filling. It seems such a waste of money as it's in the back of my mouth. But then again, if a temp might only last for a month then I would have to go back again and could end up in a lot of pain later..............mmm I might just pay for the white filling if it's not too expensive. xx

I'll let you know how I get on. xx

Just got back from the dentist and have a numb mouth. It went really well. He said that part of an old filling had broken off, and removed the old filling and filled it with gauze or something, which I assume is a temporary filling.

Fell much more relaxed now that I've had it done, hopefully it lasts until baby is born. xx
