Constantly full boobs

Hiya since yesterday my boobs just seem so full. In only a couple of hours they are really painful and hard and I have to express. Im worried I have pumped to much so now my boobs are creating to much milk.

I usually pump for about 30 to 40 minutes every 3 1/2 hours but the last couple of days I have pumped for up to an hour because the milk just keeps on coming, is that a mistake? I feel like I've started to produce to much milk since pumping for longer.

Also the last 2 nights I have slept through my alarm and missed the 4am pump is just so difficult when you are just exhausted.

I'm so pissed off atm and buying a tin of formula just seems like an escape from pain, worry and tiredness

It is possible that you have increased your supply by demanding a little too much, if your not using all that your getting or it's becoming awkward the try cutting down on expressing just a wee bit.

Well at first I wasn't using all I was getting and managed to get a small freezer stash but for the last week ish Scott must be going through a growth spurt because he is drinking more. I'm now just a lot keeping up with his demand, approx 4 oz every 3 hours but sometimes more.

I guess I'll have to pump more often. They've been so sore this afternoon I can't even hold Scott against them

An hour seems like an awful long time hun.

At your early stage I really wouldn't worry about building a freezer stash - I always just tried to keep two feeds ahead (incase any got spilled, or I couldn't express on time for any reason)

In those days though I was only expressing 10 mins at a time (double pumping) - I've no idea how you are managing an hour at a time

If you have over supply - I would cut down the time that you are expressing each session - so you only have what you need and then in a couple of days it will settle down. Or maybe try expressing "little and often" so 15 mins every 2 hours? Just until it settles?

I promise you it gets easier - this week I'm down to three times a day. Its amazing! I went out for a full day for the first time since Aaron was born It was so nice to relax and not clock watch.

Oh and I get more milk expressing 3 times a day than I ever did expressing 4 times a day.

Sometimes you just need to listen to your body! Go with what you think is right x

I've been pumping so long because I'm so worried I'm not going to make enough for him so I just keep pumping until I have got minimum 4oz. A couple of weeks ago I could easily manage 4oz,usually more and that's how I managed to freeze some , but now I pump longer yet get less! Is just weird

Am I right in assuming that as time goes by I'll pump less but still produce more? It's so confusing.

I've just sat here for about 45 minutes single pumping each boob and massaging to free up the milk because I woke up so engorged with seriously lumpy boobs. Managed to get about 5 and a half ounce.

Wish I could relax about it, I'm just constantly worried I won't produce enough

Are you pumping 45 mins each boob? its too much, I only pump for 30 mins even now - and it took me a while to build up to that.

You will produce enough for him - because your body is magic! I would limit yourself to 30 mins per boob. Please try and get a double pump if you can though. I'm very lucky that I have one on free hire from the childrens hospital. Its the medela symphony and its ace. You can hire them privately for about £40 a month - which I believe is about the same, if not cheaper than formula?

I know its hard, but try to relax - you will produce enough. You wont produce the same every time you express, because your body doesn't work like that. I don't get much in an evening, but get about 12oz every morning and afternoon. I express 3 times a day and average about 30oz. (I remember when I used to count in 1ml intervals!)

I PROMISE it gets easier - you CAN do it xx

I have a double pump, my HV had loaned it to me and is brilliant. I double pump for between 45 minutes and an hour but this afternoon I limited to 25 minutes, think I'll pump more often for less time.

But... Something amazing happened about 20 minutes ago...

He latched! Properly! For about 10 minutes. We went to bed together as usual, I've been doing it regular, for some skin to skin lovin and he just latched on. It actually took my breath a little because my boobs are so sore and swollen and when he started sucking it was so strong! Hopefully this is the start of him actually breast feeding and now he has proved he can do it I am going to offer him my boob even more

That 10 minutes latch has given me the strength to carry on now. It's like he knew how p'd of I was so he gave me some hope lol!

I am so made up for you Tambo, hopefully your little boy will latch now. Have you tried latching him on in a bath? Or have you tried biological position. When was BFing specialist coming? Xxx

I did try in the bath but he just fell fast asleep in seconds of going in the water lol. I'm not sure what the biological position is? He latched lying horizontally in from of me on a v pillow. I seen the BF specialist on Monday and she just said I don't need Nipple shields I just need to re educate him to drink from a boob rather than a bottle. I've created a lazy baby so wants his milk with no effort lol.

I'm hoping so much that latching is like riding a bike and once he gets it he won't forget x

Just lie on he bed with your boobs out on your side, lay him next to you and
