Morning ladies :D

My OH and I are going to a hotel for a couple of days for his b'day in half term and the hotel has pool, sauna, jacuzzi. I know I can go swimming but how about the sauna and jacuzzi? From what I understand the heat from the sauna may not be so good but how about the jacuzzi? Anyone been in a jacuzzi whilst pregnant or heard that its not recommended?

I've never been to a posh hotel like this before and I'm looking forward to it but a little nervous too.

I've heard that jacuzzi's are off the menu too :( think its due to the temperature being too high... although think you can still sit at the edge with yer feet in! ;)

As you guessed, the sauna is a definite no because it can be dangerous to raise your body temperature.

The jacuzzi is more confusing. When I worked at a local pool, we always discouraged pregnant women to use the jacuzzi, although I never quite knew why. The temp is obviously higher than in a pool, but no hotter than a bath so can't see why that would be a problem. So maybe it's just the vibrations of the bubbles? Although I can't see that this would bring on labour unless you were ready to go anyway.

Maybe ask your midwife next time you see her? Sorry I'm not much help there. I have been in jacuzzis when pregnant, although that was right at the end when I didn't mind going into labour! Personally speaking, I would use it. In fact, I'm dreaming about how lovely it would be right now! :)

Hope you have a really lovely time.

i found conflicting advice when i looked into this
we went on a hol in november and there was a hot tub on the deck
in the end i did use it but only for 10 mins at a time, seems the main problem would be temperature but felt i wouldnt get too hot in that amount of time and i actually think some of the baths i have had were hotter than the hot tub!

Thanks for the link Kirsty, I googled too and found the same info. It's a bit of a bummer. I kinda guessed that would be the case but also wanted to see the opinions of people on here because I think sometimes the do's and dont's in pregnancy can be taken to extremes sometimes. I know this is for LO's safety but there's always a grey area and wanted to explore that.

I was also thinking along the same lines at that Indie, i thought maybe a short time would be ok, as you say a bath can be much warmer and when I take a bath I generally have it quite hot.

if i was in my first trimester i definitely wouldnt use one
when i was deciding i definitely read stuff that suggested short periods of time was probably ok
i guess it depends on how much it would worry you if you did use one, if it would make you really worried would it be worth it?
dont think any official organisation would say they are safe
the american obstetrics association says this

Although the Association does not recommend using hot tubs during pregnancy, here are some steps you can take to reduce any risk:

* Re-program your hot tub to maintain a lower temperature.
* Limit time in a hot tub to 10 minutes or less.
* Monitor the temperature of the water by dipping a thermometer in the hot tub.
* Monitor your body temperature to avoid overheating.
* Pay attention to warning signs such as becoming uncomfortable or if you stop sweating.

Yeah thought i'd post the actual advise first but to be honest i think i would go in the jacuzzi, not for long probably but like you say, how can it be any different to taking a bath? I think you are right some of the advise can be a little over the top at times. If i was early stages of pregnancy maybe id think twice but this far in i think id give it a go!!

Thanks girls, you've helped me think this through. I think I will have a go in the jacuzzi but not for long :D and I agree if I was in the first trimester I wouldn't risk it.
