Austin can't shake his cold, he's had it for about 2 weeks now & he's still poorly & miserable. Calpol and Tixylix seem to help at night, but both bottles say if you use them for more than 3 days in a row to go to the doctor. Should I go? I don't like to bother them with a cold, but I don't like ignoring instructions on medicine bottles either!

Trust your instincts. If you think that Austin seems unwell and you are worried then take him to the Doctors but if you think it's just a cold and your not worried then don't. Don't ever think that you are wasting their time though because at the end of the day that's what they are there for and it's better to be safe than sorry. I would think it's fine to give Calpol for more than three days as you havn't been giving it to him every 4 hours every day you have only been giving it at night. Have you tried Medised instead of Calpol? It is good because as well as containing paracetamol it contains an antihistimine which helps to unblock little noses.

My son is the same, he has had a cold for weeks now and his cough doesnt seem to be shifting even though he has been on antibiotics, i am going to take him back to the doctors if its not better by the end of the week.

Thanks for your replies. I wasn't going to take him but he's been coughing a lot more this morning so I've got an appointment at 10:15 and we'll see how he is. I'd rather be overly cautious than think he's okay when he's not!

Flame - I hope Leif gets better soon

Hi

Joanna my daugther has just been really poorly with a cold and a mega bad night time cough which shes had for 4 or 5 weeks now with several visits to the doctors who told me there was little they could do and in fareness there isnt. I tried everything from calpol to benalyn for kids and trixilix and olbas oil, karpol drops and none of them shifted it. I was down in england for the week until yesterday so made a visit to a chemist i've known and trusted for years and they suggeted pediatric simple lictus and I said I would take it but then they realised they were out of stock so because joanna is nearly 2 years old she gave me the normal simple lictus but told me just to give her a quater of a 5ml teaspoon which I did and it was like a small miracle, my daugter managed to get a good night sleep on it and shes so much better. So go out and get pediatric simple lictus if your kiddie is a year and a half or younger but if nearly 2 years then use the normal simple lictus as its the best thing since sliced bread. I also found rubbing vix on her helped as well.
