Hi
I was just wondering how people breast and formula feed?. With my problems with big holes in my nipples and mastitis I've been thinking more about using formula . I still want to give my baby breast milk which it has had 100% of up until now. Do people start the baby off on the breast then take them off and give them formula , if so how much formula do you give them as a top up or do people give one full feed on the breast and then the next one a full formula feed to the guidelines on back off the tin?
Thank You

For a week I fed George exclusively breast milk. Unfortunately one of my breasts got badly engorged and so one night I gave him a bottle of formula before bed. He slept through from Midnight to 6am on that bottle and was much more content so after that I regularly gave him one bottle of formula at bedtime. During the day I fed him all breast milk.

George got very fussy at the breast, often coming off, crying or falling asleep all the time. At 6 weeks I found out I had a low milk supply so switched him to formula all day with breast only at night. Although sometimes now, during the day, if he needs it I will also offer him a breast feed. I think he likes it for comfort mainly.

I started off giving him 4fl oz in a bottle then when he was regularly draining that I upped it by an oz on the advice of the HV. He's now taking 6fl oz during the day at every feed.

HTH.

Isaac has a breastfeed for his last feed around 7pm'ish, after a formula bottle, which is anything from 4-6oz, a breastfeed only at around 3-5am through the night, and sometimes a breastfeed at 8am before his 6oz bottle, depending on how hungry he is. He also has breast from around 5am to 8am as he comes into bed with us so breastfeeds at leaisure  Throughout the day he will often have 5-10mins on the breast if he asks for it if he's upset or a bottle's not ready and he appears VERY hungry, I guess you will just work out what works for you and LO as time passes, very best wishes babyroo
