Hello, I was just wondering two things:

firstly, when you are bottle feeding your baby, say 5 ounces, how often do you stop for a burp?

Secondly, I was advised to use hungry baby at night time for Thomas as he is having five ounces and the health visitor thought it might help him cut out his 12:30 feed. No such luck!! So last night I thought I would do hungry baby throughout the night, and he hasn't slept a wink all night, anyone else have these problems? I am thinking the formula must have given him a tummy ache, so tonight I am going to just do the one at bedtime and back to ordinary through the night, I am shattered!!

Any advice? We are using cow and gate.

hi M we only burp C when he stops sucking the bottle he usually burps and then has a bit more feed
cant help with the other question sorry hun xxx

thanks Rach I have been burping him every ounce and was wondering if this was normal! I might try doing him when he stops sucking!

I could tell when to burp Arianna as her sucking would be different. Now she hold her bottle and burps herself

The hungry baby milk made Arianna constipated. She had really bad tummy ache with it.

we burp luke when he stops sucking and he will kick his legs out or grunt like he has wind. he often has most of his feed before this happens but he only takes up to 4 ounces at a time even now.

i was told that hungry milk was to delay weaning and should not be used on younger babies to make them go longer between feeds as it contains different ?proteins etc which little tummys can't handle. although i see alot of people on here do give the milk quite early.

every baby seems to take to a different formula. we tried loads before we got the one that luke is finally happy on and we only seem to get it when he was nearly 3 months old!! :wall: if it doesn't agree with thomas maybe try a different formula.

hope this helps

Hi M

right well Teej sounds like Oran! He was on Cow and Gate stage 1 milk and was doing 3 oz every 3 hours, then he went to 4 oz every 3 hours then started necking that so after speaking to baz sister who has just had 2 we moved him on to the cow and gate stage 2 milk, which is for new babies but hungry babies. For the first few days it made no difference at all, then after about 3-4 days on it he has started going about 4 hours between feeds but also a big break of about 5-6 hours in the early night (say 5-11 for example) then last night (hopefully it wasnt a one off!!) he did 6oz at 7pm, slept at 9.30pm till 2.45am, had a feed (took about an hour as he fell asleep half way through) then slept till 8am, had a feed, then slept 9am till 11am!! So hopefully its working now.

Oh we find (although its more expensive) he is better on the cartons of the milk and not the powder so we mix and match it. the Health visitor told us if he got constipated give him a carton as there is different stuff in it and it should help his tummy!

Re the winding, I do it every 2 to 3 oz but we use Dr Brown bottles and Infacol now so he needs it less than before - so before we had the bottle and infacol we did it every oz as well.

It may have just been the change for Teej, as IIRC Oran was a bit fussy for the first 48 hours on changing from normal to hungry

Thanks everyone! Rusks I think I am going to only burp him when he grunts and kicks which he does do, sometimes when I taked him off every ounce he gets bored and doesn't bother with any more so will maybe carry on longer if I let him have what he wants!

JW, I am in two minds now on what to do, I was thinking of just giving him one hungry baby at bedtime then normal but maybe he is just going to take a few days to get used to it. I might do the one tonight, see how he goes and then make a decision, P is on nightshift so I would rather not have a night like last night if I am on my own as I like to share the crying!!

Rusks it was the health visitor who reccommended hungry baby otherwise I wouldn't have done it, it says on the box from birth. Some tummys probably are quite sensitive to it though as I am assuming it is like a stodgier version of the regular.

hope teej settles soon for you hun  xxxxxxxx

i hope its works for you. i may have been misinformed. luke is on SMA LF (lactose free) i don't know what to do really as he seems comfortable on this milk however i just would love him to sleep through the night and maybe he would on the hungrier milk. i will be interested to know if it works for you. good luck.

Hi rusks, we just gave him hungry baby for his eight o clock bedtime feed and he took longer to settle and pulled his legs up and looked lke he was straining for a poo, so I have decided his tummy os too delicate for it and give it up, I hate seeing him struggle! He is fine now though thank goodness!

hi girls, just to add that my sis in law has a 9 wk old little boy & she put him on the hungry baby milk & he had awful tummy problems & wind.
its hard though when you have a seemingly starving baby to satisfy!!!

Louie only take 6 oz of milk at a time now!!!! he gets bored i think
i used to wind him every ounce until he was about 8 wks old & then every 2 or so, now he only normally burps at the end of the bottle!!!! then hes sick a bit too, but hes too greedy to let me wind him before that :rotfl:

good luck.xxxx

I think that when Jake was on 5oz bottles we burped him 2-3 times a feed. If your LO stops sucking that is a sign that they want burping and also if they are white/blue tinged around the mouth.

thanks guys, I have started burping him when he stops which means he is taking what he wants and not forgetting! I am now off the hungry baby as it didn't see him go any longer and I think it did upset him, its all trial and error isn't it!?

M I do the same with Oran now as well, he gets a bit stressy when I think he must need burping, his little legs start kicking and his head starts twisting side to side, and he gets restless, as usually he is so still when feeding lol. He has started going about 3oz now before burping.

Oran seems ok on the hungry baby stuff but I must admit it is only now the past few days he has started going alot longer between feeds - sometimes (like yesturday) up to 7 hours. the first week or so he was still on 3 hourly feeds and I thought it made no difference but I perservered!

M have you tried the cartons of ready made rather than the powder? Apparently its a different formula as the HV told us if O ever gets constipated then to give him cartons of ready made for a few feeds as it helps their tummy as its a different formula to the powder. Only thing is its alot mor expensive, at 45p for a 7oz carton!!

anyway as long as teej is happy thats all that matters!

Its all so confusing!! I have some cartons in the house already so will try him on those when he looks to be constipated, I always think they are such a waste at the moment as they are 7 oz and Teej only takes 4-5 and you are not allowed to keep them!

you can keep the cartons for 24 hours in the fridge M (well you can with the C&G ones if there the ones you have) so like I just pour out 4oz on a night if he necks it I do another 1.5oz and then leave the rest for the next feed in the fridge, so you kind need to use 2 cartons to get 3 feeds if you catch me so that way your waisting less!

i had lillie on c&g for 6 weeks she had terrible trapped wind and was only going poo 3 days inbatween i spoke to doc cos she was really struggeling and the girls on here recomended aptimul which i have been using and wow what a difference poo at least once sometimes 2 times a day and she is a lot more comfy and taking more. its a pound more expencive but well worth it maybe u could just try it?? xx

whats aptimul? I am so confused with all the different stuff there is!!!
