Hi all,

As you may or may not know at my last midwife apointment they put me on two iron tabs a day as i was feeling out of breath and tired and they weren't doing my bloods till next apt.

Well that was wednesday and they did my bloods and rang me today and said my iron is really low at 97 which is bad considering i've been taking iron. So she has refered me to a consultant who i have to see next week.

Has anyone else experienced this? When she took my bloods i said i was still feeling really exhausted and she said some people dont absorb iron and then they have to give it to you intravenously. I'm assuming she means via a drip?

Anyone know anything more?

Thanks!

A pee'd off Laura

Aw no sorry to hear this. Are you drinking plenty of orange juice? I don't know much aboiut this problem but I know vitamin C helps you absorb iron.

Hiya sweetie, I had a similar result. I had been experiencing visual distortions and headaches and just felt comatose most of the time. I went into hospital because of htis. My HB levels came back at 9.5. I was put on Pregaday tablets which I have been taking for a couple of weeks now and supplementing this with foods high in iron such as spinach, red meat, figs, dates etc and I feel so much better. The doctors did tell me that in order to ensure the iron is effectively absorbed into my bloodstream I should take it with high strength vitamin C and reduce my intake of caffeine which can affect it. Perhaps you could ask to be switched to a different high strenght iron tablet?

Also, it does normally take a while for iron levels to rise. My sister was unfortunate to have an ectopic pregnancy a couple of years ago and she lost a lot of blood and her iron levels dropped very low and it took her at least 2 months to get her HB up to a safe level.

Hi,

Yeah i drink loads of orange juice and fruit juice.

I suppose i'll just have to wait and see. I have been on them since my last apt a month ago so surely it should be higher. I dont know what they'll do but i am fed up feeling crap all the time :(

Hi Lau,
I have no experience of this to share, but just wanted to wish you all the best, I hope they manage to help you out with it so you can get your energy back a bit

My friend has had very low iron levels with 3 of her pregnancies and she gave birth to beautiful, healthy babies :) I would just say try and eat lots of iron rich food and drink plenty or orange juice, usual iron leveled pregnant ladies can get tired, don't be too down, as some of it is because you're a mummy to be, very best wishes Laura, and remember you are doing everything you can, just take it easy, physically and emotionally, the lack of sleep won't be helping you either, I do hope things take a turn for the better after today for you
