I bought one and have started using it but with my backache and trapped nerve in my bum, I'm wondering if this is making it worse! Doesn't seem like a good position to be in - squatting! Should I still use it? Are you girls using a ball?

I borrowed a yoga ball for a while off of my OH's mum but was a bit naughty and didnt use it much!

I cant sit still long enough

if used properley it is the perfect thing to use to alleviate back pain... but if used wronlgy it canmake things worse.

The golden rule is your hips need to be higher than your knees so make sure it is inflated as fully as possible... this may have to be done over a few days so that the rubber can stretch and you should keep the air topped up.

We use birthing balls in prenatal Yoga, but for trapped nerves/sacroiliac pain (right down at the lower back) I would advise just sitting upright slightly to the front of the ball and making small circles/figures of eight under your tailbone. I actually did this when I had a lower back aggravation (obviously not pregnancy related  ) and it was gone in a couple of days.

For lower back pain I wouldn't advise dropping into a squat. With a large ball, just sit towards the front (most people sit right in the middle and get no benefit) and I would recommend keeping the knees below the hips as then the legs are activated and take some of the compression out of the lower back.

The name of the game is (easy, gentle) experimentation and improving mobility. Move your hips and spine around in all directions, snake your spine, generally flow like a belly dancer trying to bodypop and you might find something that alleviates your discomfort. Draw the cutains or do this somewhere your neighbours can't see or they might have you disqualified for enjoying yourself :rotfl:

All the best for 2007!

i bought one from asda, but its not big enough, then i got a bigger one for my birthday, it does help my pelvis if i sit on it, but im too lazy and just flop on the settee haha, im gonna make an effort to use it for the next few weeks though to help baby into optimal position, as dont want another back to back delivery

Thanks thats most helpful. Scott - I thought I had been sitting in the wrong position, again, thanks for the info.
