When do you talk about your birth plans with the Midwife and what choices do you have...like for the baby to be placed straight on you...things like that?

Also why do some hospitals not do epidurals? I think mine does but the city near me theirs doesn't do them

xxx

I have no idea sorry in my notes it says discuss birth plan with midwife at 34 weeks, but my plan is simple least pain as possible and be on labour ward wth a midwife. No idea about epidurals never been lucky enough to have one i have always wanted one but never had time, you never know this time i may be longer and i may get one.

I didnt discuss my birth plan with the midwife until i was 38 weeks and id already done it by then, so all she did was read through it. No idea about the epidurals either hun sorry xxx

The one and only time my wishes were discussed was as the oxytocin was being put into my canula lol. it was like "have you thought about pain relief? Do you want skin to skin? right ok, cool!" lol

Hopefully youwill be more organised than me haha

Is everyone not on the labour ward with the midwife? Sorry if i am being stupid lol...don't know much about this lol. Is their certain things you can request? if so what? xxx

If i don't have an Epidural i don't want to be laid on my back i want to be kneeling or something if i can? Also if i am brave enough...pull baby out when shes ready to come out, i don't know if your allowed but i saw someone on a birth programme doing it lol xxx

I had my 36 wk app on thurs and she didnt mention it. If she doesn't at the 38 wk app Im going to ask her about it x

Mine has told me to start looking at the labour section of my pregnancy notes and write down any questions I have to discuss at the 36 week appointment.....

I did my Birth Plan last week myself. I googled it and read some samples and made my own using these. From what I can gather some midwives don't really care whether you have one or not, they scan it and bin it! Not very comforting! I hope I get a lovely midwife when I am in labour and not some grumpy old biatch who is having a bad day!

last time i printed my birthplan off and put it in my maternity notes myself - along with everyones mobile numbers written on a list incase there was no signal/flat battery on phone etc.

I remember my midwife asking if i had done one but it was more the midwives in the labour ward who actually read it and looked at it - and to be honest i had a few different midwives over the course of the labour and they all took the time to read it and make comments like "i see you want the baby straight to you for skin to skin etc" - they were really good.

This time i haven't done a birthplan yet so i will prbably just alter my first one slightly and print that off again! Mine was so "open ended" i didn't really see the point in some ways... like "i want to have as little drugs as possible but if i feel i need them would not rule any out" etc! the more options you give yourself the less likely you are to be dissapointed.

I asked for the cutting of the cord to be delayed until it stops pulsating but to be honest i couldn't even tell you if this happened or not!

oh well better get finding that old birthplan!

I have already started my birth plan. My midwife said there is no harm in me doing it early if I know what I want and it would be good for DH to familiarise himself with it too so he is fully aware of what I want. I am fairly adamant on some points too.
NO epidural unless 100% neccessary,
NO episiotomy (spelt wrong) unless 100% neccessary
I want access to the water bath when I am in labour.
I want to be able to move around
I want to give birth squatting
DH wants to cut the cord
I want baby to be given straight to me if possible
I don't want to be left without a midwife in the room
I don't plan on wanting pethidine - but would like it available if I am desperate

I am going to make up a little basket of goodies (biscuits/sweets/chocolates) and put the birth plan in that. Hopefully it will be received better than if I just thrust a piece of paper at them saying 'this is what I want!' Lol!

sorry thats just me, I have very fast labours last one was 8 mins from start to finish so I had my baby on induction ward with hubby delivering the head as midwife ignored the buzzer when she finally came in she said what more do you want i have just given you paracetemol. hubby said the head is here then all panic stations.

That is shocking! What bad attitude!! Hope I don't get a midwife like that!

Xx

I know my labours are very rare but they are scary enough nevermind without a midwife. but it was my 5th and they had my history all been very fast 3rd was 18 mins and 4th was 15 mins so she should have been prepared really, they were with my 4th and were very good, so i am hoping it was just a one off.

Hopefully!! Do you reckon you will beat 8 minutes this time? ;)

Xx

Thanks for all that girls...think i will have a google! Wow i wish i could have a labour that long :) lol. What a nasty cow of a midwife though, i would of said oi bitch its your job, get me another midwife...i think the labour madness would of took over lol. xxx

I hope not i'm hoping for about an hour to be honest its so scary, but can only hope, doctors reckon it will be even shorter but i dont believe thats even possible.

you dont want a too quick labour you can go into shock and tbh its a better experience to actual experience it if you get what i mean when its really quick you dont get time to actually process anything and can be very scary

also not everyone will get a midwife them with them the whole time as your midwife might be dealing with a few ladies all at different stages of labour on my 3rd the midwife was only in with me to check me and to deliver bear in mind every midwife has alot of thing to do the paperwork alone takes a while, on my last baby i had a midwife will me for most of the time and it felt strange really as it was like i was just being watched lol

your right midnight, too quick labours are horrible people think your really lucky but dont realise how scary they actually are, i went into shock after my 3rd and 5th, but ongest labour was my 1st at 1h 56 mins so cant really judge against a long labour, but my 2nd was 52 mins and was perfect best experience ever. and a midwife with oyu at all times would feel like being watched never had that mainly they pop in and out which i like knowing they are there but not watching me all the time.

I've never thought of it like that before, going into shock if it all happens too quickly. We can't win us ladies it seems!
