In my area, the midwife comes to your house, and so you have to get yourself weighed and get a print-off with your BMI on one of those machines at Boots.
My first midwife appointment is tomorrow, so I got myself weighed today. Now, I haven't weighed myself in a long time, and although I'm well aware I'm not skinny, I was HORRIFIED at how much I weighed and I know I'm going to be given a hard time about it. Been sitting here crying since I got home from town, I really hope my weight doesn't affect my pregnancy too much - I'm ashamed! :(

Oh hun don't beat yourself up about it - worrying unnecessarily will stress you and the baby out. I'm sure if you tell your MW how you feel about it she will be very understanding. There are lots of people who are overweight and have very successful pregnancies by not putting too much weight on during the process so I'm sure she can give you some advice on how to proceed from where you are (there's no point in thinking what if so try and focus on being positive and moving on from here) xx

Aaaw honey its not easy. I was over 15 stone before TTC and I lost just over 2 stone as I knew I wanted to lose as much weight as I could before getting pregnant. I think I've put on half a stone in 6 weeks already and I'm beating myself up about it too. The midwife won't judge you at all - she will help you have the best diet now you are pregnant and keep you on the right track, Its all about healthy eating - not losing weight now!! Wipe away your tears - thats actualy just hormones kicking in - you will feel better tomorrow.... big hug x

Please don't let this get you down. I was embarrassed when the midwife weighed me my BMI was 30 so classed as obese but the midwife didn't even flinch, she just wrote it down, didn't even mention it.

My pregnancy has been fine *touch wood* so far and baby is healthy and wriggly!

Thanks everyone. I realised after posting this that I had received my first scan date in the post (it's 7th Feb!) so that definitely cheered me up a bit :)

aww dont worry hun they will prob just get you to see the consultant a few times some areas do this some dont im the oppisite i have low bmi and i have to see the consultant and have extra scans god knows why though as all my babies have been a good weight for my size :) just because your bmi is higher doesnt mean your unhealthy :) in fact i know a few bigger ladies who are alot healthier than the slim ones me included lol

I am a size 14-16 and 5'4-5'5, which I know is considered 'larger' but I don't think it's THAT big. I think I was just shocked at how much I weighed, I was just a bit taken back by it, and Tracey M was right, definitely hormones playing havoc! I had a nap and am feeling a bit more positive.

Don't worry about it at all! My BMI was exactly 30 when I got weighed at the 8 week appointment, and although I was ashamed, the midwife was actually pleased with that as it was lower than it had been last time I got BMI recorded at doctors, and she said that 30 or under counted as no extra risk. From your pic there you don't look like you're above BMI of 30, but even if you were, my mate has a BMI of around 35 and she's just had a totally healthy pregnancy and baby.

hi im leanne new to this forum. im 13 week pregnant with my 3rd child. i read 1 of ur old posts that u have an underactive thyroid same as me, do you feel different now ur expecting?

Hey lolo DONT PANIC!

Im VERY overweight....got pregnant in June and without knowing I was pregnant at the time we changed our lifestyle as a family and to date Ive lost just over 2 stone WHILST pregnant and the consultant is over the moon with it....so even if you are a little overweight you can still maintain what you gain during pregnancy and keep it as healty as possible...dont worry theres lots of us who could be a little lighter but were not and were all fine xxx

Awww Hun, hope the replies have helped a bit. I was a bit gutted that my BMI was 30 at my first appointment as I'd managed to lose 4 stone a few years back and then put on nearly 2. But no one has mentioned my weight as a concern at all. And so far everything is going well.
*hugs*

I too am 'overweight'
I know im not skinny but I dont feel like a big fat blob either lol

But my BMI is 31, the midwife said because I am overweight I have to have the gestational diabetes test late in pregnancy.

Now Im going to go slightly against what others have said here.....but its just cus I would rather have been prepared for what she was like.

I thought the midwife was honestly horrible about my weight (Im 5'4 and a size 14/16) she kept saying I was too fat, and it means I wont have a healthy pregnancy and stuff like that. Luckily Im a tough one, but it still upset me (luckily Im now swapping to a different midwife who I hope will be nicer - she also wouldnt listen to me about where I wanted to have the baby...and just put the place she was suggesting in my notes instead of where I said I wanted)

I hope you have a nice midwife (Im sure most are) but just thought you would rather be prepared for what she might say to you :)

i really wouldnt worry i started pregnancy at a size 18 finished it a size 28 i gained 5 st during and 2 after having her im now seriously trying to loose it id be surprised if they will bat an eyelid to your size

What a BITCH... :slap: her dish!!

Hi Leanne!
I am constantly shattered but I'm putting that down to the pregnancy rather than my thyroid as I have been on the right dosage of thyroxine for a while now, but am being put under consultant care throughout pregnancy because thyroxine levels can fluctuate so much that they have to keep a close eye.

teampc - She sounds horrible! I have just seen the midwife for the first time and:

1) She didn't even ask me for the BMI & Weight printout
2) She didn't mention weight at all!

I totally forgot about it until she had left, and realised I still had the weight printout and that she hadn't asked for it! She took my blood pressure which was fine, went over a lot of paperwork, booked my 16 weeks visit, had a cup of tea and left! So I was worrying about nothing!

I wouldnt worry about it!!
I was heavier before my first pregnancy, only put on 7lbs whilst pregnant (DS1 weighed 7lb 3oz) cos I craved healthy foods and water all the time (definately not normal for me lol) and lost 2 stone a week after delivery! Second pregnancy was lighter this time by 2 stone, only put on 9lbs (DS2 weighed 7lb 6oz) and have dropped to my pre-pregnancy weight within days of giving birth. Unfortunately I developed insulin controlled diabetes with my second pregnancy but it meant I had to watch my diet which is why I didnt put on much weight and they think I had diabetes in my first pregnancy too but they didnt automatically check then so dont know for sure.

my midwifes never mentioned me being overweight. cant remember my BMI but i was a size 16-18 before getting pregnant and im a 18 now.
I have had a very healthy pregnancy with no major probs, my boy came out perfect :cloud9:

My midwife was horrilbe about my weight, but what was funny is that she was bigger than me!!! And yet she felt it was important for me to be refered to a nutritionist - felt like saying : Do you even know what that is??

I'm so worried about my first midwife appt, I am very overweight and the pregnancy came as a bit of a shock I had planned on losing weight before it happened. Since my BFP last week I have been drinking so much water and basically only eating fruit and veg and other healthy foods (not like my pre-pregnancy diet!!) I feel healthy and am not aware of any underlying problems but I am a size 24 and it does worry me that my little apple seed might get crushed!! Doubt I will see a bump until I'm due to give birth!!!
Its reassuring that some of you say you had healthy pregnancy's anyway, I would feel so devastated and guilty if my weight caused problems, puts all those takeaways etc into perspective :-(
