What determines a baby's birth weight?

  1. The mother's frame

  2. The birth weight of the child's parents

  3. Other Factors

    Hi Everyone,

What do you think determines the baby's size/weight at birth?
The size of the mother or is it likely to follow how much the parents weighed at birth.

I'm quite a small person but i was 9lbs and my DH was 10lbs at birth!!! We were both a little early too. Should i be worried

I dont know that parents weight or build really come into it that much.
I was nearly 9lb when I was born and Im 5'8 now so over average height.
OH was 8lb when he was born and 6ft now.
I have large feet (size 9) and a large pelvis so technically I could give birth to a whopper, but eh midwofe has said my baby is just small and will prob be just about 7lb!

I hvae bought minimal clothing as its the sort of thing that people buy for you when the baby is born. I have just bought a few baby grows and sleep suits in newborn and 0-3 month size, and a couple of little jackets and hats. Bub will probably be swaddled in blankets more at first and I will see what people get for it, will no doubt get mothercare vouchers and stuff to as pressies so I can always go out and get anything its in need of.

Jamie has already grown out of his newborn sizes so i would advice not buying too many of these sizes and stick to 0-3 months. Plus like cat said lots of people buy newborn sizes for presents.
