My 12 day old bubba has tummy cramps - I think
He feeds, then screams with pain (his little face goes blood red and its sounds like a very sore cry). Its not wind as I burp him regularly during the feed and the winds come up with no problem.

I have noticed that he is pooing but not very much each time and from the movements he makes I think his tummy is hurting.
Poo is yellow in colour, and smells very acidic - like mustard....

Any suggestions on how I can ease the pain for him? Do you think its the formula he is on? We originally used cow and gate ready mix formula and have now changed to the powder cow and gate comfort 1....

HELP

Hi hun

do not have experience with formula but by the sounds of things it could very well be because you have switched over maybe give it a few days and see.
Hope your LO feels better soon

hey

How long after the feed does it happen? My LO has done this since birth, it starts about 45 mins after finishing a feed. When I described the symptoms to the doctor last week, she said it was colic. I have just changed to cow and gate and since then she has been pooing during these bouts - I think it is where she is trying to fart and is pooing a bit each time!

Also when I asked the hv about this she said that it is just where their tummies need to get used to digesting food (I am hoping mine gets used to it soon!)

when my son was a baby, he used to suffer badly with constapation, anyway i used to give him watered down prune juice, he loved it and it sorted all his problems out...........dont know if its any help for you

George is the same - but is brestfed so although it could be your formula and the fact you have recently changed it might not be exclusively that.
I think with George it's wind- he strains so hard he makes himself sick whihc is unpleasant :(
We tried infacol (well I say we - I can't bear to give it to him so DH has to do it  ) and it seemed to ease it a little

thanks girls

Well, I think its the powder...
I have switched back to the ready made milk and he seems 100 times better. I also got some anti colic bottles and his winds are coming up a lot easier....
His poo is still the same colour, but there is more of it now and its not smelling so acidic....it still really pongs tho hahahaha

I suppose its just trial and error eh? Will carry on with the ready made formula for a few days and see how I go...if it doesnt get better I will go to the doc.

Thanks :)

cow and gate comfort 1 makes the poo's really stinky and odd colours!

Yeh its definately wind problems. my little one always burps straight after a bottle but give him half an hour and he'll scream, pull his legs up and groan just like your little one. I sit him upright or over my shoulder and just try and comfort him until he burps again :( its can take anything up to 30mins to do even the tinyest of burps. he then relaxes but 20mins later we often have to go through it again! classic colic. Its a nightmare but is definately getting easier as he gets older or because im getting more use to dealing with it!

I changed him to cow and gate comfort at about 6weeks and he's been excellent since. practically sleeps through the night now. he does still get colic regularly but the consistant crying has stopped. I also used the doctor brown colic bottles.

The yellow mustard poo is normal. if you change to comfort milk prepare for them to change to green stink bombs!! :puke: :D

I use dentinox for his wind it does help him bring it up (although it tends to make him a little sicky) if hes crying with cramps i use gripe water (has to be 1month to use it!)

Hope this helps, your not alone!

Thanks Sage - sounds like the same problem....
I bought some anti colic bottles and this has helped loads. He brings up the winds nicely...but have the problem of him screaming 30 mins after a feed so thought it was his tummy. He is not constipated as he is pooing, but I can see that he is in pain and usually screams just before pushing out a poo so perhaps he finds it hard to push?
I have started giving him cooled boiled water so will see if that helps, but will also try winding him well after a feed as it sounds like he has what your little one has.

Thanks for the advice :)

definately sounds like colic to me, Paris was the same. They do grow out of it though. Try different positions for winding him, sometimes I would spend ages winding paris.

ooo got another tip for the trouble pooing to. Add half a teaspoon of fine BROWN sugar (not the chunky stuff) to his bottle several times aday. My doctor recommended it to me and it works a treat! He might just not like pooing mind. Kyran often has a winge just before hes doing a poo and hes definatly not constipated.
