Hi mums, my 3.5 month old has started to do this thing when nursing, which perplexes me. He starts to nurse normally from the first side, milk flows well and then, about 8-10 minutes into it, he pulls off. I suppose this is because the flow slows down...? I burp him and when I try to put him back to that breast (which is soft but not totally empty), he refuses even before he latches... It's like he knows that side is slow flowing, even if I do breast compression to get more milk out, he's not having it. As soon as I switch him to the other side, he's happy and nurses again for quite a while. I suppose it's related to the speed of flow? But how can such a young baby know that he's being put to the same side, even before he has that breast in his mouth??

No idea I'm afraid, but didn't want to read and run,

These babies are funny, clever little things!

I have read about babies having.tendancies to prefer one breast over the other. Have a Google Ithink its quite common on not a lot to do with flow. Although if he has been doing it a while that breast may have reduced milk production so have a go at pumping that breast to increase it in the mean time.

Behavior is the same no matter which boob I start with. He has never had preference for a side though I have also read is common. Thanks anyhow.
