I'm not sure where to post my question.

My wife is 25 weeks + 5 days pregnant. Today she was at work and started to bleed, then there was a mixture of blood and water. An ambulance picked her up from work and took her to the hospital. They did a scan, the baby was fine, wriggling and kicking away. But the blood continued coming.

The midwife explained that the placenta was a 4 covering the cervix and that when the baby was ready my wife would have to have a Caesarean Section.

My wife has been told that she may well have to stay in the hospital for 10 weeks until the due date.

She (like me) is totally depressed at the prospect.

Has anyone had the same thing happen, and if so is there any chance she could come home when the bleeding stops.

Thank you

Jay

hi sorry i cant help you much.. but just didnt want to leave you hanging.

im sure someone will answer you shortly and and have an idea about whats going on etc,
but until then, i hope your wife is ok and if the babys fine on the scan then evrything should be ok

one of the girls i know had a bleed at 24 weeks turned out the baby had knocked some of the placenta as far as i know they planned to keep her in till the baby was born, when my waters broke they said i would have to come in everyother day for monitoring but could go home, don't know if it would be the same for a bleed though

Good luck

Heather

Jay, try posting this also in Trimester 3 as any ladies in this situation who have gone home will be in there at 27 weeks so may miss this.

Also there is online midwifery help from this website: www.fertilityfriends.co.uk you will need to register and then go to message boards and "ask a midwife"

Good luck

Alfie

Sorry this is happening to you

If the placenta is covering the cervical opening, it's common that it can cause bleeding. Unfortunately this means your wife is best staying in hospital.
As the baby grows, the placenta may well move away from the opening, but it all depends upon how much it is covering.

The condition is called pacenta previa. The bleeding can sometimes be very heavy indeed. I know it's depressing, but she really is in the best place.

I hope things improve soon

Edit: If she's been told she'll need a C-section then it sounds like the placenta is completely over the opening. That means a normal birth is out of the question.
Be reassured that she's in good hands!
