16 week appointment

Will they be able to hear little beans heartbeat when I go for my 16 week appointment next week?

Well, my midwife offered to listen to baby's heartbeat on my 16 week appointment - even earlier than that - but I've read other girls' stories here, where midwives say it's too early or something like that and they don't.

I'd say, if you want them too, then go ahead and ask them to, if they don't offer to do so.

Good luck and I hope they do - it's amazing to listen to it for the first time!

Yes, definitely. The 16 week appointment seems to be the first one where they listen for the heartbeat, but there should be no problem. It was really clear for me, and again at 17 weeks when my auntie listened for it for me (she's a midwife).

The only thing I'm not sure about is whether the size of the woman makes any difference, does anyone know if it's harder to find the heartbeat if you are more curvy?

I thought I would get offered at my 15+3 appointment but I didn't, so I asked. She said she could try but it might be too early, but she found it straight away

I'm curvy (meaning I look pregnant even when I'm not ) and I first heard the heartbeat at 11 weeks, and then again at my 14 and 16 week checks. The mw might have to look for a minute to find it, and once she had to turn the volume up to hear it a bit more clearly, but it was definitely hear-able. She tried to tell me that we wouldn't be able to hear it when I asked, but as I'd heard it a few weeks before I asked her to try anyway.

It is worth asking (insisting...) as it only takes a minute of their time, and it's one of the most comforting sounds in the world.

I have a doppler (one that's the same as the mw's) and I've heard the heartbeat since 12 weeks!

So if she doesn't offer.....ask!

I got to hear my baby's heart beat at my 16 weeks appointment... it was wonderful it recorded at 140 beats per minute.
I went home logged on to the internet and looked up the"old wives tales" to see if that determined the sex.... Guess what? ? ?

Under 140 ...good chance it's a BOY
Over 140 ....good chance it's a GIRL.....

So no further forward on that front.... but hey still got more old wives tales to try out..
